Incoming 5th District Rep. John McGuire will serve on two key committees in the 119th Congress. The former Virginia State Senator, who was elected to Congress in November, found out this week that he’ll be on both the House Oversight Committee and the House Committee on Armed Services. McGuire said one of his goals in the upcoming session will be to cut down on wasteful spending.

“We will aggressively advocate for reducing waste, fraud and abuse in government and we will work tirelessly to reduce burdensome regulations and boost government transparency and accountability,” McGuire said. “In addition to working with Chairman James Comer, DOGE Sub-Committee Chair Rep. Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rep Jim Jordan, fellow Navy SEAL Rep Eli Crane, and others, I will also be working on House Oversight with two fellow freshmen Rep elects Brandon Gill, and Brian Jack. We are excited to work with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in 2025 to help Trump hold government accountable.”

The U.S. House Committee on Armed Services is responsible for funding and oversight of the Department of Defense (DoD) and the United States Armed Forces, as well as substantial portions of the Department of Energy. Its regular legislative product is the National Defense Authorization Act, which has been passed by Congress and signed into law each year since 1962. It also has jurisdiction over defense policy generally, ongoing military operations, the organization and reform of the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, counter-drug programs, acquisition and industrial base policy, technology transfer and export controls, joint interoperability, the Cooperative Threat Reduction program, Department of Energy nonproliferation programs, and detainee affairs and policy.

“Peace is best preserved through a strong national defense,” McGuire, himself a Navy SEAL, added. “We would not have a country without our men and women who keep us safe. I am honored to be appointed to The U.S. House Committee on Armed Services, commonly known as HASC, in the upcoming 119th Congress!”

McGuire’s appointed was also praised by members of the Armed Services Committee, including Chairman Mike Rogers.

“John McGuire will be an incredible addition to the House Armed Services Committee,” Rogers (R-AL) said in a statement. “As a Navy SEAL, John’s insight and perspective will be invaluable. I look forward to working with him to strengthen our military.”
