Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a call for help from the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office early Sunday morning. The call went out at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, as a Buckingham resident had gone hunting a day earlier and never returned. According to the sheriff’s office, family and friends tried to find the missing man and when they weren’t able to, they called police.
Buckingham’s Department of Emergency Services brought out their Special Operations Trailer, setting up a mobile command and coordinating a large-scale search involving Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Christian Aid Ministries, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department and Virginia Search and Rescue.
The man was located around 7:15 a.m. Sunday. He told Buckingham County emergency officials he had gotten lost while out hunting and had been unable to make his way back out of the woods. The man had been able to start a fire to keep himself warm until he was located. Emergency Services evaluated the man, but he declined to be taken to the hospital.
