Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I was pleased to read about the renovation of Venable Hall at Hampden-Sydney College.

I hope your readers will enjoy learning more of the history of the building.  When completed in 1830, the building was the home of the Union Theological Seminary, the first Presbyterian seminary in the South. The seminary was moved to Richmond in 1898.

Prior to its moving, Major Richard Venable, Hampden–Sydney Class of 1857, bought its buildings for $10,000 and gave them to the college, doubling the size of the campus., Venable Hall was named in his honor. Major Venable was the great-grandson of Nathanial E. Venable of Slate Hill, a founder of the college.
