Hampden-Sydney basketball on the rise

Hampden-Sydney College has moved up ten spots to No. 13 nationally in the week one D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Tigers, ranked 23rd in the preseason poll, earned 338 points in this week’s rankings. Hampden-Sydney basketball is 4-1 on the season, including a 74-71 road win at preseason No. 5 Christopher Newport University on November 19 in Newport News; the Captains (5-1) are ranked 10th this week. The Garnet & Grey’s only loss (81-78) was to Gettysburg (PA) College (7-0), ranked 12th in the new poll, on Nov. 23 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.

Defending NCAA Division III National Champion Trine (IN) University (5-0) is ranked first with 623 points, including 23 first-place votes, followed by Washington (MO) University (4-0, 578) at No. 2, Emory (GA) University (4-0, 556) at No. 3, Illinois Wesleyan University (5-0, 497) at No. 4, Trinity (CT) College (4-0, 491) at No. 5, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (3-1, 426) at No. 6, Keene State (NH) College (3-0, 411) at No. 7, Tufts (MA) University (4-0, 406) at No. 8, Trinity (TX) College (3-0, 381) at No. 9 and CNU (5-1, 379) at No. 10. Fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Guilford (NC) College (3-1, 204) is ranked 17th, while ODAC schools Randolph-Macon College (2-2, 52), Virginia Wesleyan University (3-1, 17) and Roanoke College (4-1, 5) are each receiving votes in the poll.

Luc named to All-Tournament team

Kyrell Luc earned a spot on the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team, the tournament announced at the conclusion of the 25th edition of the event. Luc, a senior, averaged 12 points per game to lead Longwood, and he scored in double figures in two of the team’s three games.

The Dorchester, Massachusetts native played a key role in Longwood’s 89-81 quarterfinal win over UAB, pouring in 14 points to go with five boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal. In the team’s tournament finale against Kansas State, he led Longwood with 15 points while chipping in three boards and four assists. 

Over the three-game stretch, Luc shot .476 (10-21) from the floor and was nearly perfect from the foul line, where he went 16-18 (.889). For the season, Luc is averaging 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He is the team leader in steals and averages 1.6 steals per game.
