As we continue on through the month of November, a number of church events start popping up on the calendar. Plus, it’s time for fall festivals, holiday bazaars and, let’s not forget, Veterans Day celebrations in the area. Here’s a look at what’s happening in the community calendar.
NOVEMBER 8
SPAGHETTI DINNER – A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held for Randolph District Fire Department on Friday, Nov. 8. The meal will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 per plate. That includes spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. The fire department is at 2145 Cumberland Road.
NOVEMBER 9
HOLLY JOLLY BAZAAR – The Women on a Mission group will hold a Holly Jolly Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the fellowship hall of Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with local arts, crafts, fresh baked goods, soaps and other items up for sale. You can also pre-order some beef, chicken or turkey chili by calling 804-492-5151. The cost is $8 per quart and $4 per bowl. The church is located at 14 Fitzgerald Road in Cumberland. The fundraiser will go to support local and state missions.
PRAYER BREAKFAST — The New Hope Baptist Church Womens Ministry with First Lady Dianna Allen will host their Third Annual Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. The event will be held at the church located at 2072 Abilene Road in Keysville. The guest minister will be Rev. Dr. Wendy Lyle-Jones from Apostolic Faith Church of All Nations. Breakfast will be served prior to the event. Everyone is invited to participate.
PAMPLIN ART SHOW — The Pamplin Area Legacy Supporters (PAL) will host their 13th annual Pamplin Art Show on Saturday, Nov. 9, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held at the Historic Pamplin Depot, located at 115 Main Street in downtown Pamplin. Local artists are able to display and offer their original creations for sale. Previous Art Show events have attracted local artists working in a broad range of mediums. Fine art as well as pottery, primitive art and photography are usually represented.
VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION – Muddy Paws Winery, located at 2640 Rock Island Road, will hold a Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be Veteran-Owned Businesses on hand, as well as informational booths providing resources and information for veterans such as benefits and support services. Green Dogs Unleashed will be on hand, promoting the “vets need a sidekick” pet adoption program. There will also be live music and food trucks on hand.
VETERANS DAY EXTRAVAGANZA – Farmville will host A Salute to Veterans on Saturday, Nov. 9. The event will be held at Three Roads Brewery, located at 312 W. Third Street, starting at 1 p.m. The Farmville Brass Band will perform, along with Sweet Adelines, with an Honor Guard and military displays.
FALL BAZAAR – The Curdsville Community Center will host a fall bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be homemade crafts from local vendors, food and secondhand treasures in the White Elephant Room. The center is located at 122 School Road.
CUMBERLAND STEW – The Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department will be making stew on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the fire house at Route 13 in Cumberland. Stew will be $10 per quart and ready by 1 p.m. The stew will be alpha gal friendly, with all proceeds benefiting the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department. You can pre-order by calling 804-241-3526.
NOVEMBER 10
CHURCH ANNIVERSARY – Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland will celebrate the 156th anniversary of the church on Sunday, Nov. 10 during the 10 a.m. service. Rev. Kevin Bolden, Pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church will deliver the message, with dinner after the service.
FALL FESTIVAL – Cedar Baptist Church, located at 3932 Bell Road in Dillwyn, will hold a fall festival following church services on Sunday, Nov. 10.
PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY – First Rock Baptist Church, located in Prospect, will celebrate Rev. James E. Hurt Jr.’s pastoral anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Rev. Irma Watson will be the guest minister.
NOVEMBER 15
MOAA MEETING – The MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) will hold their monthly lunch meeting on Friday, Nov. 15 at 12:30 p.m. That’ll take place at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe in Farmville with a self-pay lunch.
NOVEMBER 16
GRIEFSHARE – There will be a ‘Surviving the Holidays’ seminar for people who are grieving a loved one’s death at the Farmville United Methodist Church. The event will run on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. You can register by Nov. 7 at 434-392-4686.
PRE-MEN’S DAY SERVICE – Midway Baptist Church, located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville, will hold its Pre-Men’s Day Service on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. Sharon Baptist Church Male Chorus and Brother Lashaud Moore will be in concert.
NOVEMBER 17
MEN’S DAY SERVICE – Midway Baptist Church, located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville, will hold its Men’s Day Service on Sunday, Nov. 17, during the 11 a.m. service. The guest minister will be Rev. Van Petty, Pastor-Elect of Tarwallet Baptist Church.
FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – St. Andrews Baptist Church, located at 2100 Taro Road in Cullen, will hold Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Nov. 17 during the 11 a.m. worship service. The keynote speaker will be Minister Troy Walker, newly elected minister from Triumph Baptist Church. A country meal will be served afterward in the fellowship hall.
MISSIONARY PROGRAM – High Bridge Baptist Church will hold its annual missionary program on Sunday, Nov. 17 during the 11 a.m. service. Missionaries are asked to wear white. Dinner will follow morning worship, with a Family & Friends service held in the afternoon, featuring guest preacher Rev. James Hurt Jr. of First Rock Baptist Church in Prospect.
FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Dillwyn will celebrate Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Nov. 17 during the 11:30 a.m. service. Dinner will be served after the service.
FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – Gravel Hill Baptist Church will hold Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. Trustee Malcolm Tillerson will be the guest speaker with light refreshments afterward. Gravel Hill is located at 3357 Cutbanks Road in Pamplin.
NOVEMBER 21
PRE-THANKSGIVING DINNER – Midway Baptist Church will hold a pre-Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville.
NOVEMBER 24
PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY – New Store Baptist Church will celebrate the second pastoral anniversary of Pastor Irma Exantus on Sunday, Nov. 24 during the 11 a.m. service. The theme will be “Leading with Love, Serving with Grace”, with a special message from Pastor Dr. Sylvain Exantus. There will be lunch served afterward in the lower level. The church is located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville.
DECEMBER 7
PRAYER BREAKFAST – Jericho Baptist Church, located at 615 Franklin Street in Farmville, will hold a community prayer breakfast on Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Amy Tillerson-Brown, Professor of History and the History Dept. chair at Mary Baldwin University. A freewill offering will be collected.
DECEMBER 14
PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY – Mercy Seat Baptist Church will celebrate Rev. Walter M. Fells’ 18th anniversary with the church on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. Marvin Fields of Second Mount Zion Baptist Church in Hanover. The Worship Leader will be Rev. Reggie Dabney of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Amelia.
