Ryland Barry Dowdy, 77 of Farmville, went to his eternal home on Sept. 26. He was born on Jan. 28, 1947, to the late Ryland and Katherleen Dowdy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ryland and Katherleen Dowdy and brothers, Benny, Roger and Billy Dowdy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dana Thomas Dowdy. Together they built a beautiful life and family. He was a devoted father to Tanya Ligon (John), Chad Dowdy (Alison) and Brad Dowdy. He was a wonderful Papa to Chelsea Dandridge, Drew and Tori Dowdy and Logan and Aiden Dowdy.

In addition, he is survived by his sister, Barbara Schmidt (Bobby) and brother, Wayne Dowdy. He was a special brother-in-law, cousin and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Barry graduated from Prince Edward Academy in 1966. After graduation, he served in the United States Army from June 1966 – June 1969, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He served in the Vietnam War and was a proud Veteran. He has a long career as a welder, where he was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers/Local 45.

He was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church.

Barry enjoyed his retirement and lived life to the fullest. He was well known in his community and a friend to many. He never met a stranger. He was a loyal member of the Rice Volunteer Fire Department, VFW, American Legion and served on the Board of the Piedmont Area Veteran’s Council. Barry enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, cooking and was an avid gardener, always looking forward to his first tomato. He loved to tell a good joke but was serious in his commitment of caring and helping others. Barry leaves behind many fond memories and he will be deeply missed and loved by all who knew him
