Michael Edison Isley passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Sunday evening, Oct. 6, at Heritage Hall Dillwyn, where he was tenderly cared for during the last 17 months of his life.

He was born Nov. 27, 1944 in Norfolk, to Joseph and Thelma Blanks Isley. Thelma later remarried Edward F. Marcuson and they operated a store east of Buckingham Courthouse. Mike and brother, Jerry, grew up there with Annette, Edward Jr. and Karen.

At 4 years old Mike contracted polio and spent over a year in MCV. Upon recovering and relearning to walk, he entered Buckingham Public School and graduated from Central High in 1964. He was Captain of the football team and played the trumpet and guitar. Mike had a quality singing voice as well.

He worked at Craddock Terry Shoe Factory until 1968, when his step-father died and he ran the store with his mother and siblings.

As a young man, he was an avid motorcyclist and rode a Norton 750 Commando. A favorite cruise was to Crabtree Falls. He enjoyed local dances, state parks, weight lifting and cared for dogs and cats.

In 1972, Mike married Nancy Mills Sutton and they had one son, Michael Mills, Chief Master Sgt., USAF retired. His second wife, Ramona Shaffer gave him Amy Krishna, an extremely talented artist.

By 1977, Mike had passed the merchant’s torch to his brother Ed and worked at Thomasville Furniture in Appomattox for 20 years. Soon after his sister Karen became his primary caregiver and during the entire 17 months at Heritage Hall, only missed five days spending time with her dear brother.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, brother Jerry, sister Annette, daughter Amy and her mom Ramona.

Left to mourn their loss and celebrate Mike’s angel wings are Eddie and children, Annette’s children, Michael Mills and Nancy, and the most faithful and patient of sisters, Karen L. Marcuson.

Dunkum Funeral Home is serving the family. Condolences may be sent through their online site.  Memorial plans are private.
