Two properties were damaged over the weekend in what Prince Edward County Sheriff Tony Epps is calling a couple of “drive-by shootings”. These both took place on the Back Hampden-Sydney Road. The first was reported on Friday, Oct. 4 in the 3000 block of the road, as the homeowner returned to find a bullet hole in her house. The second one took place at about 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 in the 5000 block of the road. This time, a home was struck by a bullet. No one was harmed in either incident.
Anyone with any information about these shooting incidents are asked to please call The Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office at 434-392-8101 or Crimesolvers at 434-392-3400
Three Roads offers help to storm survivors
It’s going to take some time for Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee to recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. Power is still off in multiple communities and the water is undrinkable, with every chemical from gasoline to paint thinner blended in due to the flooding, which destroyed homes and then swept away everything stored inside. With that in mind, Three Roads Brewing is serving as a drop-off point for essential supplies, collecting them to distribute later this week.
“In response to Hurricane Helene, we offer our condolences to those affected and acknowledge our community’s enthusiasm for supporting relief efforts,” Three Roads posted on their social media.
The brewery is collecting things like batteries, solar lights, blankets, flashlights and jackets. The jackets are especially critical, as we’re heading into the middle of fall, when temperatures drop fast in the affected areas. If you have things to donate, drop them off at Three Roads, located at 312 W. Third Street in Farmville. Those donations need to be made by Wednesday night, as the plan is to deliver them Thursday morning to Asheville, North Carolina.
American Legion needs help
Members of the American Legion Post 32 are asking for help. Every year, the group places flags on the headstones of veterans at Trinity Memorial Gardens on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. This year, the group still needs volunteers to help. There will be a brief instruction meeting on Nov. 2 before the work begins. With enough volunteers, Legion members say, it should take roughly around an hour to finish the project. If you want to volunteer, they do suggest you bring a tool to make about a ¼ inch hole about 6 inches deep in the ground.
Pet Walk coming up
Piedmont Senior Resources has another event in the works for later this fall. Now that the ducks have raced, the group is asking residents to bring their dog to Wilck’s Lake for a walk. The first annual Piedmont Senior Resources Pet Work is set for Saturday, Oct. 19. That’ll run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wilck’s Lake, with proceeds going to raise money for the Pet Love Program. That program helps supply pet food, pet supplies and fund veterinary care for pets of low-income older adults in Prince Edward, as well as Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg and Nottoway counties.
On Oct. 19, there will be food, crafts and corporate vendors, a photo booth, a 50/50 raffle drawing, a silent auction, a pet costume contest, a group pet walk and other activities for both you and your pet. Not admission to the event itself is free, but if you want to take part in either the pet walk or costume contest, the cost will be $10 per walker per animal. All pets are welcome, however they must remain leashed at all times and owners are responsible for cleanup.
Tiger named Player of the Week
Hampden-Sydney College senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week. Wallace was chosen for his work during Saturday’s 31-0 shutout victory against Guilford (NC) College.
Wallace had a career-high and game-high 13 tackles, including two for loss with one sack, to lead H-SC to its home triumph. He had five tackles in the first quarter and followed with four tackles each in the second and third quarters, posting his sack for a seven-yard loss early in the second quarter, ultimately leading the Tigers to their first shutout since March 5, 2021.
Through four games, Wallace leads the Garnet & Grey with 31 total tackles, including 12 solo, with a team-best 7.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and one fumble recovery. He is the ODAC leader in tackles for loss and sacks (eighth nationally), is tied for second in fumble recoveries, and tied for sixth in total tackles.
