Hampden-Sydney College wants to use this Saturday’s game to help victims of Hurricane Helene. The Hampden-Sydney basketball team will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Guilford College in a preseason exhibition. Admission is $10 and all ticket sales will be donated to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

“When Coach Palombo called to ask if we wanted to partner to help with the Hurricane relief efforts, we were on board immediately,” said Hampden-Sydney basketball coach Caleb Kimbrough. “This is a great opportunity for our program to use basketball to try and help others in need. We value any opportunity to redirect our focus on serving others. We encourage everyone to attend the game or donate to the cause!”

For students only, there is a donation option provided the sum of the goods donated is equal to or greater than the $10 admission price. Some suggested items include blankets, gloves, socks, hand and foot warmers, PPE, trash bags, cleaning rags, and cleaning products. In addition, canned goods and non-perishable food items will also be accepted.

It will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Semifinal contest, which was won by the Tigers; a 62-57 come-from-behind victory on March 14 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Quakers, who defeated H-SC 80-71 at their place last December 2, 2023, were recently ranked 17th in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, while H-SC was ranked 23rd in the poll. The Garnet & Grey are the defending ODAC Tournament Champions and return one starter among nine returning lettermen, adding 10 newcomers to the program that finished 31-3 a year ago-a school record for wins. GC was 26-5 last season and returns two starters among 13 returners, adding eight newcomers.

Hampden-Sydney basketball opens the 2024-25 regular season on the road at non-conference opponent Swarthmore (PA) College on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
