Barbara Lee Callison Charlton, 89 of Dillwyn, passed away in her sleep Sept. 28.
Born August 8, 1935, in Princewick, West Virginia, she graduated from Beckley High School in 1953 and attended Alderson Broaddus College and then Concord College, achieving her BA in education with a minor in art in three short years. She received her M.Ed. specializing in reading from UVA.
She taught in Vinton until 1969, when she moved to Dillwyn to marry the love of her life, R.E. She taught in Buckingham until the birth of their first child. Together with R.E., they lived on Charlton Farm, where they built their house, raised three children, countless chickens, beef cattle and gardens.
She was a member of Dillwyn First Baptist Church. A choir member, Recording Secretary and participating in Helping Hands, she loved serving her church and community.
She is preceded in death by many loved ones, especially her loving husband of 47 years, Royce Elmo “R.E.” Charlton Jr. and her parents, Etta and Sidney Callison.
She leaves her sister, Judy Raif (John); her three children: Royce E. Charlton, III (Julianna), Jenny C Barrier (Brian) and Timothy Charlton; and her grandsons: Alistair C. and Ronan S. Barrier. She will be missed by many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins and asks they carry her memory to others.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, Oct. 4 from 5 – 7 p.m., at Dunkum Funeral Home. Her service will be held at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 5, with interment to follow in the Town Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family are invited to join us in fellowship afterward at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
