The offense ignited late on Saturday, as Hampden-Sydney put up 30 points in the fourth quarter to beat Brevard College 51-30. New head coach Vince Luvara picks up his first win with the Tigers on the road.
“Proud of the team’s finish,” said Luvara. “A lot of teams would have quit there in the third quarter. They finished and that is what being a champion is all about.”
A big part of that was due to junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido. The Dallas, Texas native tossed for a career-high 255 yards and four touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns were caught by senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez, who had 99 yards on the day. Meanwhile, sophomore running back Terry Hicks added career highs of his own, putting up 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Vince Luvara, Tigers get started
Brevard got things started early, taking the opening possession and driving 79 yards before Chancellor Lee-Parker scored on a four-yard run. Vince Luvara and the Hampden-Sydney Tigers answered on their first possession. In eight plays, the Tigers went 66 yards, finishing with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sido to Fernandez. Getting the ball back quickly, the Tigers added a second touchdown on their next possession, with Sido connecting with Sutto Lasso over the middle for a 12-yard pass.
It seemed like the Tigers had shut down Brevard late in the second quarter, as the Tornados fumbled on the one-yard line. But soon after, Sido threw an interception that James Woods ran back for a touchdown to tie things up at 14-14. That was how the teams entered halftime, after Hampden-Sydney missed a 50-yard field goal with 23 seconds left.
The Tigers added another score right after halftime. Driving down in their first possession, Hampden-Sydney went 76 yards on eight plays before Sido connected with wide receiver Ethan Dowdy on a 30-yard touchdown. Minutes later, the result wasn’t as beneficial, with Sido getting sacked in the end zone. Brevard then followed up that safety with a scoring drive of its own, taking the lead at 23-21. The Tornados then added another touchdown run, increasing their lead to 30-21 after three quarters.
Tigers take control
Then Hampden-Sydney took control. Sido started off the fourth quarter with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Fernandez. After a defensive stop, the Tigers drove 66 yards on 11 plays, with Hicks scoring on a five-yard touchdown run. Vince Luvara decided to go for two and Sido ran it in, taking the 36-30 lead.
The Tigers’ defense stood tall once again and forced another Tornados’ punt, with the offense taking over at the BC 47-yard line. It took eight plays to reach the end zone this time, with freshman running back Fain Barton scoring on a 13-yard run with 4:10 left to play. Sido added his second consecutive two-point conversion run for a 44-30 lead. Key to the drive was a fumble recovery by freshman left guard Cash Topinka on a third down play that he advanced 13 yards for a first down.
With less than two minutes left, Hicks took a direct snap and ran 42 yards for the game’s final touchdown at 1:25.
