You can blame lightning for one of the fires Toga Volunteer Fire Department had to deal with Friday in Buckingham County. The second, nearly 12 hours later, came as a result of a controlled burn.

First, the group responded to a call that came at 7:48 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30. This was in the 8200 block of Francisco Road, where a bale of hay had caught fire due to a lightning strike Thursday night. Brush truck 35 responded with four firefighters. They had the fire put out and the site secured in just over an hour.

Another call for Toga came at 7:41 p.m., with Dillwyn, Farmville and Prospect volunteer fire departments also being called out to a reported structure fire after heavy black smoke started showing up on North Lane. Toga Engine 32 and Tanker 33 responded to the scene with eight firefighters. It turns out this wasn’t exactly a structure fire. While Toga Volunteer Fire Department was en route, Farmville arrived on scene and confirmed it was a controlled burn on the opposite side of the structure. All responding units and personnel were placed in service.
