Many residents are not aware that there is one less eyesore in Cumberland County. When we moved here in 2016 and traveled from Route 60 via Pinegrove Road to our residence, we passed this old dilapidated building on Route 654. We later found out this was an old two-room school house used by residents of Cumberland County from 1917 to 1964, known as Pine Grove School. Today it doesn’t look like the same building, but is a beautiful white building on a solid foundation with a new roof and other structural repairs.
The funding for this work is supported in part by an African American Civil Rights grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.
Pine Grove School obtained recognition as both a National and State Historical site during the last couple of years. These achievements were accomplished by the dedication and hard work of members of the AAMD Pine Grove Project organization. You can find more information concerning this project by visiting their website https://www.ammdpinegroveproject.com.
I look forward to watching the upcoming changes to Pine Grove School and the grand opening. I congratulate the group on a job well done and wish them the very best as they progress with the completion of the project as I know you have plans for renovation of the inside and changes to the landscape. Congratulations once again and best wishes for the future.
