We start this week’s high school football report with the highest scoring game of the week. And if you followed this team last year, you’d be amazed how different they look, just two games in. We’re referring to the Cumberland High junior varsity team, which ran over Nelson County 72-10. 

Last year, competing at the varsity level, this extremely young team scored 126 points all season. Two games in this season at junior varsity, competing against other 8th, 9th and 10th graders, the Dukes have already scored 100 points. It was the Neymyah Hill show on Thursday night, as the Cumberland quarterback repeatedly drove down the field, leading his team to score after score. Meanwhile, the defense just shut down Nelson County, limiting them to 10 points on the night. Looking at the records, it’s worth pointing out this was the most points scored in a game by a Cumberland team, varsity or JV, in over a decade. 

Up next, the Dukes go on the road to face the Randolph-Henry JV team, which beat Prince Edward 35-0 on Friday. If you want to watch the Dukes play, they’ll return home on Oct. 2 to take on Nottoway. 

Eagles struggle at home  

It was a rough Friday night for the Prince Edward Eagles. The varsity team welcomed Altavista to town and the visitors hit hard. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 46-0 in favor of the Colonels. 

What we can say is that’s when the scoring mostly stopped. The Prince Edward defense only gave up two scores for the next three quarters. However, the Eagles’ own offense stalled out, leading to the 58-0 loss on the night. 

Up next, Prince Edward will play host to 3-1 Northumberland on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff for that special weekend game is set for 1 p.m. This is the games that filled the hole left behind when Cumberland decided to shut down its varsity football program for the season. Northumberland comes in having given up only 63 points on the season, with 42 of those coming in their latest game.

In other games around our region, it was Buckingham shutting out Fluvanna 35-0; Randolph-Henry lost to William Campbell 32-6; Mecklenburg County shut down Central High in a defensive battle 14-7 and Fuqua lost to Broadwater Academy 56-6.
