Some good news for the Hampden-Sydney golf team, as the Tigers are ranked 23rd in the nation. That came in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, as the Tigers received 38 points. The group is among four schools from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) to earn a Top 25 national ranking, along with Washington and Lee (7th), the University of Lynchburg (8th) and Guilford College (20th). Methodist University is currently number one after winning its 14th national championship last spring.
The Tigers, under the direction of eighth-year head coach and Director of Athletics Chad Eisele, return 18 lettermen overall and four of their top five golfers, and expect to be led by returning senior All-American and All-ODAC selection Nick Rubino and sophomore All-ODAC honoree Jack Barnes. The Garnet & Grey were ranked No. 20 in the final Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll last spring, and No. 21 in the final SCOREBOARD powered by NCAA Division III Team Rankings-finishing second at ODAC Championships.
Hampden-Sydney opens the 2024-25 campaign at the 54-hole Flower City Preview on September 22-23 at the Midvale and Cobble Creek Country Clubs in Rochester, New York. It’s the same site(s) as the 2025 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships scheduled for next May 20-23.
Book sale returns to help library
You can mark Sept. 19 through 21 on your calendar, as that’s the dates for the Semi-Annual Used Book Sale at the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library. Friends of the Library members will get early entry to the sale, which helps support the Little Free Libraries and community programs. This event is also a “Friend-raiser” as it is one of the group’s best outreach efforts to sign up new members. The library is located at 1303 W. Third Street in Farmville.
Hampden-Sydney starts cross country season
The Hampden-Sydney College cross country team opened the 2024 campaign with a second-place finish totaling 43 points at the EMU Heritage Invitational hosted by Eastern Mennonite University on Friday evening in Harrisonburg. Freshman Jordan Chorbaji led the Tigers with his 5K time of 17:50.3 to place seventh among 59 runners. The James Madison University club team won the four-team race with 30 points, while Bellamy Immanuel of host EMU was the individual winner with a time of 16:11.0.
The Tigers will race again at the Lancer Home Open, an 8K event to be hosted by nearby Longwood University on Saturday, Sept. 7. That starts at 9:30 a.m. at the former school golf course in Farmville.
Longwood tennis schedule set
The Longwood women’s and men’s tennis teams will play 11 fall tournaments — including six on the women’s side.
Each team will also play in the inaugural Big South Individual Singles and Doubles Championship on Oct. 25-27 in Asheville, N.C. That event includes 16 singles players and eight doubles pairs.
The men’s season gets underway Sept. 7-8 at Mary Washington in the UMW Kickoff Classic. The women’s season begins at the CNU Mock Dual Invitational Sept. 14-15 in Newport News, Va.
The three-day Davidson Invitational is next for the men from Sept. 27-29.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will play in Richmond’s River City Open Oct. 4-6. Selected women’s players will also take part in Wofford’s Big Southern Shootout the same weekend.
The Longwood men play in the ITA Regional Championships Oct. 10-14 at Old Dominion. The women head to Virginia for the same event Oct. 17-22.
The women’s team concludes fall at UNCW’s Seahawk Ocean Classic Nov. 1-3.
