SEPTEMBER 28

SEMINAR — An Emergency Preparedness Seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Farmville Church of Christ on Saturday, Sept. 28. The church is located at 1401 Milnwood Road in Farmville. The seminar is free admission and will include door prizes. Register at farmvillechurchofchrist.org if you plan to attend.

BAPTIST MEETING – The Cumberland Union Baptist Association will hold its quarterly meeting at Bright Hope Center on Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at 9 a.m. A training workshop focusing on church growth and attendance will be conducted by the Baptist General Convention.

FUN DAY – Calvary Baptist Church, located at 3010 Sandy River Road in Burkeville, will host a Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. The event will feature a picnic, outdoor games and fun activities. 

PIG ROAST FUNDRAISER – Piedmont Habitat for Humanity will hold its annual Pig Roast fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 28. That’ll run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Farmville Community Marketplace. Food provided by The Fishin’ Pig will include pulled pork and chicken, with homemade sides. Vegetarian sides, appetizers, desserts and non-alcoholic drinks will also be available. Craft beer will be provided by Three Roads, with music from JB and the Get Down Browns. Tickets are $30 per adult, $10 for ages 6 to 20 and free for children 5 and under. You can buy at the event or on the website at piedmonthabitat.org.

SEPTEMBER 29 

SUNDAY DINNER – The Mary Branch School will hold a Sunday Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 29. This is free to anyone who drops by, as long as supplies last. Spaghetti, salad, bread, a drink and dessert will be given out to everyone who drops by 632 S. Main Street in Farmville from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. 

FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, located at 1913 Tuggle Road, will celebrate Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Sept. 29. At 3 p.m., Rev. Waverly Brown, Pastor of Rosebud Baptist in Dundas will deliver the message. 

FRIENDS & FAMILY DAY – Mt. Zion Baptist Church will hold Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Sept. 29, beginning at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Pastor Donald Hamlette, accompanied by Barbara & Company, who will provide music. Lunch will be served following morning worship. 

DEACONS AND TRUSTEES – The Cumberland Deacons and Trustees Conference will hold its annual program at Sharon Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 29, beginning at 3 p.m. Deacons, trustees and congregations of member churches are invited to attend. 

OCTOBER 1

BEEKEEPERS MEETING – The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Prince Edward County Extension Office. That’s located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. OCTOBER 4 – OCTOBER 7 

HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE – The Cumberland Friends of the Library will hold their annual Holiday Boutique and Sweets in the Stack as a three-day fundraising event running from Friday, Oct. 4 to Monday, Oct. 7. The Sweets event, a raffle basket extravaganza,  will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. This will include a variety of sweet and savory treats. The Holiday Boutique Shop, meanwhile, will be open during library hours on Friday, Saturday and Monday 

OCTOBER 5

FALL FARM FEST – Historic Buckingham will hold its annual Fall Farm Fest on Saturday, Oct. 5. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Historic Village. There will be food, kids’ activities, animals, tractors, vendors, exhibits and music from the Farm Use Band. The Historic Village is located about two miles west of Sprouse’s Corner, off of Route 60 at 84 Lee Wayside Road. 

FALL FESTIVAL – Buckingham Baptist Church, located at 24234 North James Madison HIghway in the Gold Hill area of New Canton, will hold a fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 5. That’ll run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there will be bounce houses, games and food, along with chili and barbeque by the bowl or quart.

BBQ FUNDRAISER – The Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department will host a chicken BBQ fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Fire House on Route 13 in Cumberland. Chicken halves will be $8 and ready by noon. Desserts and drinks will also be available for purchase. Pre-orders encouraged by Sept. 24 by texting 804-241-3526. 

SOULTOWN TO MOTOWN FUNDRAISER – The Mary E. Branch Heritage Center will hold a ‘Soultown to Motown” fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 5. That’ll run from 8 p.m. until midnight at the Fireman’s Sports Arena in Farmville. A 70s inspired wardrobe and a $20 donation to the Mary Branch Center is requested. 

OCTOBER 6 

WOMEN’S & MEN’S DAY – High Bridge Baptist Church, located at 2526 Lockett Road in Rice, will hold their annual Women’s and Men’s Day program on Sunday, Oct. 6. Rev. Stella Forest Tucker from Chesterfield will deliver the message during the 11 a.m. Women’s Day service. People are asked to wear some combination of pink and black. Dinner will be served following worship. Then at 2 p.m., the Men’s Day service will be held, with Rev. Jeffrey Perkinson from Charlottesville. 

HOMECOMING – Jones Chapel Baptist Church, located at 947 Trents Mill Road in Cumberland, will celebrate homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 6. Worship starts at 10 a.m., with former pastor Rev. Jim Lamb delivering the message. A song service begins at 11 a.m. with Lauren Talley. Lunch will be served afterwards. 

NAACP QUEENS PAGEANT 

The Cumberland County NAACP Queens Pageant/Banquet will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6, starting at 3 p.m. at Bright Hope Center. The keynote speaker will be Justin Reid, a native of Cumberland County. For ticket information, please call 434-392-5884. 

OCTOBER 7 – 9 

REVIVAL – New Hope Baptist Church, located at 1909 Cartersville Road in New Canton, will hold revival services from Monday, Oct. 7 through Wednesday, Oct. 9. Service begins at 7 p.m. Minister Aerial Goode Short, Associate Minister of Salem Baptist Church, will deliver the message on Monday. On Tuesday, Rev. Jeffrey Minter, Pastor of Warminister Baptist Church will preach. On Wednesday, Rev. Kimberly W. Stanton, Pastor of Ridgeway Baptist Church, will give the sermon. 

OCTOBER 7 

CURDSVILLE COMMUNITY MEETING – Curdsville Community Center will hold a family-friendly potluck dinner and pumpkin decorating on Monday, Oct. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. People are asked to bring their favorite dish, along with your creativity. Carving and painting supplies will be provided. You can bring your own pumpkins or there will be some to purchase. The Center is located at 122 School Road, just off Route 15. 

OCTOBER 12 – 13 

PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY – Sharon Baptist Church will celebrate the 25th pastoral anniversary of Rev. Robert R. Jones on Saturday, Oct. 12 with a banquet. That’ll be held at the Wedgewood Golf Course banquet facility, located at 36 Wedgewood Drive in Farmville, beginning at 3 p.m. For ticket information, please call 434-392-9546. The church will continue the celebration on Sunday, Oct. 13 at the 10 a.m. worship service, with Rev. Clifford Temple Jr. as guest preacher. The church is located at 1130 Plank Road. 

OCTOBER 12

FALL FESTIVAL – Twin Lakes State Park will hold a fall festival and craft marketplace on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is set for Sunday, Oct. 13. The family-friendly activities include hay rides, pumpkin painting, a scarecrow competition and a delicious array of seasonal treats. Pumpkins will also be available for purchase. The scarecrow event will be judged at 1 p.m. and guests are welcome to bring their own supplies. The event is free but the $7 parking fee remains. The parking fee will be waived for anyone who brings at least two nonperishable food items, to be donated to F.A.C.E.S. 

OCTOBER 13 

WOMEN’S DAY – Mercy Seat Baptist Church will observe Women’s Day on Sunday, Oct. 13, starting at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Lona Miller of All Saints Apostolic Church of Richmond. 

OCTOBER 19

STEW FUNDRAISER – The Mercy Seat Baptist Church Missionary Ministry will hold a stew and cornbread fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will be held at the Turn Out Grounds across from Mercy Seat Baptist, starting at noon. Stew will be sold by the quart for $12. 

OCTOBER 20 

CHOIR ANNIVERSARY – The High Bridge Baptist Church Inspirational Choir will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 20, beginning at 2 p.m. A number of choirs and other musical groups will be on the program, making a joyful noise unto the Lord. The church is located at 2526 Lockett Road in Rice. 

OCTOBER 26 

FALL FESTIVAL – New Store Baptist Church will hold a fall fest on Saturday, October 26, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be face painting, trunk-or-treat, games, activities and crafts. The church is located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville.
