Members of Cumberland County’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) competed at the 98th annual Virginia FFA Convention this summer. That was held June 24 to June 27 on the campus of Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg. The Cumberland FFA took part in a number of Career Development Events (CDE) and Leadership Development Events (LDE), showing off their abilities.
The group competed in Veterinary Science, Livestock Judging, Milk Quality, Agriculture Mechanics, Environmental and Natural Resources, a Talent Show and Middle School Events.
Cumberland placed respectfully in all competitions, including Madilyn Adkins finishing in the Top 10 for livestock evaluation. The Cumberland FFA chapter also was named a National and State Superior Chapter, while also winning a Public Relations award.
CDE and LDE events and chapter awards were not the only things the group had to celebrate. The highlight of the event was when the Cumberland FFA Vice President Kaitlynne Kelsey and Secretary John Tucker Bowman received their Virginia FFA State Degree.
Cumberland FFA, explaining a state degree
There are a few requirements to achieve before earning a state degree. You must be an active FFA member for at least the last 24 months. You have to finish at least 360 hours of agriculture education instruction at or above the 9th grade level. Also, you have to demonstrate leadership by performing 10 parliamentary law procedures, serve on a major committee or be a chapter officer, while participating in at least five FFA activities above the chapter level.
“Kelsey and Bowman are both integral to the ongoing success of the Cumberland County FFA chapter and Agriculture programs,” said Cumberland FFA Advisor Josh Fleenor. “Both members have served as officers for their chapter since becoming eligible as 9th graders. Anytime you attend a Cumberland FFA event you can expect to see them there embodying the motto of FFA living to serve.”
One each of Kelsey and Bowman’s respective parents were also recognized for their service to the club. Bowman’s dad was recognized for his selfless service to the club as was Kelsey’s mom who was the first honorary member of the Cumberland FFA Chapter.
“I don’t think we have two more deserving members to receive the Virginia state degree than Tucker and KK. and to receive this recognition the same year as their parents really makes this a special moment,” Fleenor said. “I am proud I was able to play a small role in these moments, they truly are the things that makes the hours worth it all.”
