Cumberland High will have a mix of the old and new in terms of the basketball coaching staff this year. School officials announced on Friday, Sept. 6 that Tyrone Mosby will return as the head coach for the boys basketball team, with Da’Sean Shearn joining as the head coach for the JV boys program. School officials said these appointments bring a mix of seasoned leadership and fresh enthusiasm to the Cumberland Dukes basketball program.

Mosby, who currently serves as the Athletic Director and Career Development Specialist for the division, will continue in his administrative roles while returning to the sidelines to lead the boys’ basketball team. Having previously served as the head coach from 2003 until 2021, Coach Mosby brings nearly two decades of experience, knowledge, and passion back to the program.

“We are thrilled to see Coach Mosby return to coaching,” said Superintendent Dr. Chip Jones. “His deep understanding of the game, his leadership, and his commitment to our students are unparalleled. We know he will guide our team to success on and off the court.”

Meanwhile, Da’Sean Shearn, a graduate of Cumberland High, will be the new Head JV Boys Basketball Coach. During his time as a student at CHS, Coach Shearn excelled in basketball, baseball, and golf, earning district recognitions for his athletic accomplishments. As a new addition to the coaching staff, school staff said Coach Shearn brings energy, dedication, and a connection to the Cumberland community that will inspire and motivate the next generation of athletes.

“Coach Shearn’s love for the game and his dedication to Cumberland athletics are clear,” said Principal Missy Shores. “We’re confident he will be an excellent leader for our JV team and a valuable asset alongside Coach Mosby.
