Prince Edward Middle Coach Louis Gould III had said before the season that this year’s football team was built around defense and they showed that Tuesday. Playing against Colonial Heights Middle School before a home crowd, the Eagles won 34-0.
“We expected them to play with heart and to be aggressive,” Gould said. “This team is full of kids who are competitive, (they) love to compete.”
And compete they did. The team was led by a strong defensive performance, forcing four fumbles and picking up one defensive touchdown on the day.
“Our defense is our identity,” Gould said. “They are mean, rough and love contact.”
Prince Edward Middle isn’t bad on the offensive side of the ball either. Quarterback Avan Carrington threw two touchdown passes and ran 27 yards for another one. Jaylin Boyd and Elijah Coleman were the recipients of those two touchdown passes.
“We started off slow,” Gould said. “(It’s a) home game, nice crowd. When they found their feet, they took off.”
The team will be back at home on Wednesday, Sept. 4, where they’ll take on Halifax Middle School. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 and you can pay as you come in.
