Lloyd Martin Jr. served Cumberland County in multiple ways across several decades. The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors honored his long service during their Tuesday, Aug. 13 meeting with a resolution, paying tribute to a man who impacted many lives.
“Mr. Martin was one of the first people I met when I came to work here,” Cumberland County Administrator Derek Stamey said, speaking to the crowd at Tuesday’s meeting. “I understand what a great influence and impact he had on his community. I can’t say enough about that impact.”
Martin both helped found and served as a volunteer for the Cartersville Volunteer Fire Department for 68 years, including 55 years as its Chief. Martin was appointed on March 1, 1994 to Cumberland’s Electoral Board and served in that role for decades, through 2023. He was also a justice of the peace and a magistrate during his time in Cumberland. Martin also helped found the Cartersville Ruritan Club, where he served for 61 years. And many people in the community knew his business in Cartersville, Martin and Dabney, frequenting the store over the years. He was also a member of the National Guard, having joined in 1955 and was a member of Cartersville Baptist Church for 73 years.
The resolution put forth and approved by supervisors recognized and highlighted all of Martin’s work in the community, expressing the board’s “highest regard and appreciation for the service and dedication that Mr. Lloyd Allen Martin, Jr. performed for the County of Cumberland and its citizens.”
