It was extremely hot. That’s something both youth and adult track teams from Cumberland’s AAU Sixty Westy Jets can attest. On Saturday, July 13, the groups took part in a meet at J.R. Tucker High School with over 800 athletes comprised of 48 teams from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Washington D.C.

A number of Jets brought home medals from the competition. That includes Bren Woodson-Trent in the 9-10 year-old group. Woodson-Trent earned first place in the 1500 meter race. Also in the 9-10 year-old group, Brandon Jackson placed third in the 1500 meter run. For the 13-14 year-old group, Keith Holman Jr. earned third place in the 3000 meter run, while Daryl Woodson-Trent took home third place in the discus and Makayla Eppes finished seventh in the discus. In the 15-16 year-old group, it was Jayden Eppes taking first place in the javelin throw, while Jayla Augustin came in second in both the shot put and discus. In the 17-18 year-old group, it was Kameron Brown taking first in the javelin throw and third place in the high jump.

The Sixty West Jets were supported by parents and coaches that served as volunteer long jump officials for the Cannonball Cooper Event. They included Mr. and Mrs. Brandon Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Holman Sr. and son Holman, Mr. and Mrs. Woodson-Trent, Mr. and Mrs. Terrell Eppes, Kevin Jasey and Kenny Jasey.
