The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Kappa Rho Omega chapter of Farmville recently held a tree planting ceremony, where a Shadblow tree was planted and dedicated to the memory of Velma Park Jones at Buckingham County Middle School in Dillwyn. Velma Jones was a retired science teacher at the middle school and a dedicated member of the local sorority chapter. Group members said a plaque will also be placed at the site of the tree in her honor.
This activity is one of the sorority’s “Enhance Our Environment” initiatives. Its purpose is to select strategies to optimize the sorority’s collective ability to improve and protect the environment and to prioritize activities that promote the adoption of more sustainable and responsible practices at the individual and community levels.
