Who organized a kitten dumping at one of Prince Edward’s solid waste compactors? That’s what Prince Edward Sheriff Tony Epps and his department are working to find out. On Thursday, May 23, Prince Edward County Animal Control was notified that someone had dumped a garbage bag at the Darlington Heights solid waste compactor. Two of the three kittens inside had already died by the time they were found. The third was turned over to Animal Control and is currently receiving veterinary care, county officials said. 

“If it weren’t for the attendant at the site who heard meowing coming from the compactor, then all would have perished,” Animal Control officials said in a statement, adding the kitten was given a warm bath before getting treatment. 

“Our department is dedicated to the wellbeing of all animals in Prince Edward County,” said Adam Mumma. He works as Prince Edward’s Chief Animal Control Officer. “Animal Control and the Sheriff’s Office want to hold accountable anyone who engages in acts of cruelty towards animals.” 

Epps said he and his staff are working with Animal Control to get some answers. 

“We have been in the Darlington Heights neighborhood all day,” Epps said on Friday. “We have some good leads and are following up on them. We hope to bring this to a conclusion soon.” 

One thing the investigators have released is when the kitten dumping occurred. They have confirmed the incident took place Thursday morning. As of Friday, officials said the kitten getting treatment is expected to recover. 

“We appreciate all the support and patience thus far,” Epps said.
