Sumner Riddick Pugh Jr., 89 of Farmville, passed away peacefully on April 19. Born in Portsmouth on July 28,1934 to the late Sumner Riddick and Grace Ruggles Pugh. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and then received a Masters of Education from Longwood University. He was principal of Gloucester County High School followed by Page County High School. He was manager for the Virginia Employment Commission for the region of Southside Virginia. He was a long-time member of the Lions Club, where he twice served as President.
He was a devoted lifelong member of the Episcopal church serving on the vestry of Johns Memorial including Senior Warden. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his bridge friends, working in his garden, playing tennis and traveling.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, Patty Tipton Pugh, of which he had a wonderful marriage, he is survived by Sumner Riddick III (Lisa) of Augusta, Georgia, Warner Scott, Potomac, Maryland and Anne Tipton Pugh of Charleston, South Carolina. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Sumner Riddick IV (Shelby) and Elizabeth Holt Poore (Clancy) and two great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, at 11 a.m., at Johns Memorial Church in Farmville. A reception will follow immediately after the service.
