One Cumberland man is dead after officials in Henrico County say he lost control of his motorcycle Monday afternoon. 

Henrico County police were called out to the 4900 block of W. Broad Street around 2 p.m., after reports came in of a single-vehicle crash. The incident took place near the intersection with Willow Lawn, as 25-year-old Keyshawn Diming of Cumberland was traveling west at high speed. According to the police report, Diming lost control of his motorcycle, while trying to avoid other vehicles on the road. As a result, the report says he crashed at the intersection of W. Broad Street and Bishop Road. Diming was taken to the local hospital, where he died soon after. 

Firehouse primary set for Buckingham Republicans

Last month, the Buckingham County Republican Committee was dissolved, by a 22 to 6 vote of Republicans from around the Fifth Congressional District. Part of that decision involved plans to create a new committee in its place. That’s what’s happening this Saturday, as a firehouse primary has been called in Buckingham. 

Beginning at 9 a.m. and running until noon, Buckingham Republicans are asked to come to the Buckingham County Public Library, located at 16268 N. James Madison Highway, and cast a ballot. The goal of the event is to elect a chairman for Buckingham County Republicans. Ramona Christian, the previous chairman, is running again, competing against Jenise McNeal. Anyone who takes part must sign a statement promising to support the Republican candidates in November. 

Road game canceled for Tigers

Hampden-Sydney won’t be going on the road as planned this week to take on Mary Baldwin. The Tigers had been scheduled to play a baseball game Thursday in Staunton, but the announcement went out Wednesday afternoon it was canceled and will not be rescheduled. Instead, the Tigers get a bit of a break before traveling to take on the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, April 13 in Fredericksburg. 

Spring-cleaning contest takes off in Buckingham 

The B.A.T.F. (Buckingham Anti-Litter Task Force) is having another spring-cleaning contest to pick up trash along Buckingham county roads. There are prizes up to $300 for the person or group that picks up the most bags of trash, with pickup dates set for April 27 through May 14. Anyone is welcome to join in the competition. In the past, residents, schools, local businesses, and churches have all participated. Orange trash bags, vests, and pickers will be provided free of charge. Big South championship seedings set 

For the second consecutive year, Gardner-Webb University has earned the No. 1 seed in the Big South Men’s Tennis Championship. The Runnin’ Bulldogs finished the 2024 regular-season as the outright champion with their 4-0 Big South record, and are seeking the program’s first Big South Tournament crown.

UNC Asheville finished second in the Big South standings at 3-1 to earn the No. 2 seed, while defending champion Presbyterian College is the No. 3 seed based on its 2-2 conference finish.  Longwood received the fourth and final seed with its 1-3 league record.

 The 2024 Big South Men’s Tennis Championship will be played Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21 at the Marion Diehl Tennis Center in Charlotte, N.C. The Big South’s Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship.

Moton to host documentary viewing 

The Moton Museum will hold a screening of “Knocking Down Walls” on Monday, April 22 at 7 p.m. The film takes a look at the role Harrisonburg, Virginia played in the desegregation of the state’s schools. It features first-person accounts from a number of people directly involved in the desegregation of Venable Elementary in Charlottesville and Warren County High in Front Royal. 

The work was put together through more than a year’s research by a group of Spotswood High students. The film will be followed by a discussion, letting attendees connect with others passionate about civil rights and education. 

Pado named Freshman of the Week 

Longwood’s Blagen Pado earned his first award of the college baseball season this week, as he was named Big South Freshman of the Week. This comes after a series of games where he batted .333, adding 6 RBIs, one double, one home run and one stolen base in that timeframe. Last Saturday against Charleston Southern, Pado hit his second home run of the season and drove in two runs. For the season, the outfielder is hitting .275 with eight extra base hits in 69 at bats. He has started 16 times and made 28 appearances. His 23 runs scored are tied for third-most on the team.

It is the first time this season Pado has earned weekly honors from the Big South. It is the second time a Lancer has earned a weekly honor. Kevin Warunek was named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week on March 25.
