Hilda Nuckols, 100, wife of Colonel Ernest B. Nuckols Jr. (deceased), passed on March 31, peacefully, at the Woodlands in Farmville. Born on July 26 1923 in Andalusia, Alabama, daughter of Luther B. and Daisy C. Clanton (deceased) and sister to Lloyed B. Clanton (deceased).
She was married to Major Ernest B. Nuckols Jr. USAF, of Cumberland, in 1945. They had six children, Ernest B Nuckols III, wife Joanne, Corpus Christi, Texas, Gary C. Nuckols, wife Rebecca, St. Johns, Florida, Donald C. Nuckols, wife Virginia, Upperville, Richard R. Nuckols, wife Elizabeth, Cumberland, Bart S. Nuckols, wife Nancy, Whispering Pines, North Carolina and Ann Gregory Nuckols (deceased); 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.
A 55-year resident of Cumberland, she lived across the United States and Philippine Islands as a military wife of an Airforce Officer. She and her husband Colonel Earnest Nuckols along with five sons, retired to Cumberland and began a successful Christmas Tree Farm that operates to this day. She was very active in her community and belonged to Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, playing the piano for church services and other activities. She was a member of the Women’s Club, Historical Society, Garden Club, Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library and the Red Hat Society of Cumberland.
As a resident of Brookview at The Woodlands in Farmville, she continued playing the piano, bringing joy to the residents and staff. This included many devotions; holiday sing a longs and other occasions.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the following; Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, Cumberland Rescue Squad or the Cumberland County Public Library.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 4, from 5 – 7 p.m., at Puckett Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at Puckett Funeral Home.
