APRIL 5

SPAGHETTI FUNDRAISER — Payne Memorial Church, located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, will hold a spaghetti fundraiser on Friday, April 5. The meal includes spaghetti, salad, bread and dessert, for a donation to a family in need. Meals are available from noon until they sell out. You can eat in the fellowship hall or take it to go. 

LADIES RETREAT — The Farmville Church of Christ, located at 1401 Milnwood Road, will hold its 26th annual Ladies Retreat on Friday, April 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The guest speaker will be Robin Foutz of Waymaker Church in Lynchburg, talking about “Living a Spirit-Filled Life in a Culture of Self-Fulfillment”. This free event will be filled with music, worship, door prizes and a complimentary dinner. Residents are asked to register by march 22 at farmvillechurchofchrist.org.

APRIL 6

PANCAKE BREAKFAST — The Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, April 6 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. That’ll take place at the firehouse, located at 2145 Cumberland Road, with a meal including pancakes, baked apples, sausage and a drink for $10 and $5 for children under 12. 

FLY FISHING — The Virginia State Parks Let’s Go Team will be at Bear Creek Lake State Park on Saturday, April 6 to help show children how to fly fish. Beginning at 9 a.m., they’ll introduce children to the basics, like how to select a rod and reel combo, knot tying and finding the right fly for conditions. The kids will then practice different types of casting techniques and try to catch their first fish. All equipment is provided except waders, which are optional. The park is located at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road in Cumberland. The event is free but requires registration by calling 804-492-4410. Those interested will meet at the park’s lakeside picnic shelter. 

FISH FRY — A fundraiser for the Mary E. Branch Heritage Center will be held on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 11 a.m. A $10 plate includes two pieces of fried fish, coleslaw and french fries, while $5 gets you a fish sandwich and $4 gets a slice of sweet potato or coconut pie. Water or soda is $1. The Heritage Center is located at 632 S. Main Street in Farmville. To place an order, call 434-414-1268.

HISTORIC BUCKINGHAM REOPENS — Historic Buckingham’s Village at Lee Wayside will reopen for the spring, summer and fall on Saturday, April 6. The Village will be open to the public every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Village is located at 84 Lee Wayside Road in Buckingham. 

GOSPEL EXPLOSION CONCERT — Piedmont Habitat for Humanity’s Buckingham Build will hold its ninth annual Gospel Explosion concert on Saturday, April 6. That’ll start at 2 p.m. at the Frances Redwood Education Center, located at 27294 N. James Madison Highway in Arvonia. Special guests will include Chris Lewis, Full Life Fellowship Chorale, The Last Minute Choir and Praise Dancers. 

LEARNING ORIENTEERING — Bear Creek Lake State Park, located at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road in Cumberland, will hold an orienteering lesson session on Saturday, April 6. Beginning at 2 p.m., children will learn about how to read maps, pace distances and navigate cross country. The event is free but requires registration by calling 804-492-4410. Those interested will meet at the park’s lakeside picnic shelter. 

PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY — Forest Baptist Church will celebrate Pastor Waker’s four year anniversary on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Jeffrey Perkinson will deliver the Word and the Waker family will provide the music. 

APRIL 7 

PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY — High Bridge Baptist Church will celebrate Pastor Tim Hurt and First Lady Amanda’s first pastoral anniversary on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The guest preacher will be Rev. Sharon Baskerville of Broadnax. 

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM — A Black History program will be held at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. A meal will follow the program.

APRIL 12-13

MOTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION — Robert R. Moton/Prince Edward County School Alumni Association has made plans to celebrate a school reunion on April 12 and April 13. APRIL 13 

BAKE SALE — The Curdsville Community Center, located at 122 School Road in Buckingham, will hold a bake sale on Saturday, April 13, running from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be homemade cookies and cupcakes up for sale, made by 14 of the community’s best bakers. There will also be a yard sale happening on site, with proceeds going to benefit the Community Center building fund. 

DEMOCRATIC MEETING — The Cumberland County Democratic Committee will hold its monthly meeting on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 10 a.m. at Bright Hope Center. 

APRIL 14

PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY — Mt. Zion Church, located at 3753 Green Bay Road in Green Bay, will hold a 10th pastoral anniversary for Rev. William Thomas on Sunday, April 14, at both 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

MISSION DAY SERVICE — Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Dillwyn will hold a Mission Day service on Sunday, April 14, beginning at 11 a.m. Tiffany Esters from Fire for Christ Ministries will be the speaker, with lunch served afterwards. 

MADELINE HOUSE FUNDRAISER — Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, located at 400 High Street in Farmville, will hold a ‘Tea in the Afternoon’ fundraiser to benefit Madeline’s House. Karen Donnelly, a tea sommelier, will be the special guest. She’s a certified Tea Association of Canada Tea Sommelier, currently writing the Cuisine page for the Tea House Times magazine. She will present a history of tea and demonstrate how to make the perfect cup. Those attending will enjoy three varieties of tea with pastries, scones and sandwiches. APRIL 19 

MOAA MEETING — The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold a self-pay luncheon and program on Friday, April 19, beginning at 12:30 p.m. That’ll be at Riverside Cafe, located at 522 N. Main St. in Farmville. All active/former/retired military officers are invited, along with their spouses and guests. 

APRIL 20

MENTAL HEALTH WALK — Take A Walk With Us, a group focused on mental health, addiction and fentanyl awareness, will hold a support walk in Cumberland County on Saturday, April 20, starting at 11 a.m. The group will meet in front of the Cumberland schools, right off Anderson Highway. Everyone is invited to come walk in support of the project. 

FREE HOTDOG LUNCH — In honor of National Children and Youth Month, American Legion Post #32 will sponsor a free hotdog lunch on Saturday, April 20. The event will run from noon to 2 p.m. with activity bags given out to kids. This will happen at the Farmville Lion’s Club Park, with food donated by Merk’s Place. 

CRUISE IN — The Heart of Virginia Auto Club will hold its first cruise in of the season on Saturday, April 20, at the parking lot by Tractor Supply in Farmville. Bring your classic or antique car to the show or just drop by and check out all the cars. The Cruise in starts at 5 p.m. and runs till dusk. There will be a 50/50 raffle. The club meets the second Monday each month at Merk’s Place in Farmville. Eat in at 6 p.m., meeting at 7 p.m.

APRIL 21 

YOUTH SUNDAY SERVICE — New Store Baptist Church, located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville, will hold a Friends & Family Youth Sunday Service, followed by a spaghetti fellowship dinner on Sunday, April 21, beginning at 11 a.m.

APRIL 22

DEMOCRATIC MEETING – The Prince Edward Democratic Committee will meet on Monday, April 22 in the Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. 

APRIL 23

HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING – The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, April 23 at the Farmville Train Station. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will feature Jimmy Hurt giving a Powerpoint presentation on the French’s Church that was located in Kingsville. The group will discuss the church history and the reported 70 missing graves of French soldiers from the Revolutionary War period. 

APRIL 27 

CRUISE-IN – There will be a cruise-in to benefit the Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first 75 vehicles will get dash plaques, with food available for purchase and a 50/50 raffle. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. The firehouse is located at 2673 Darlington Heights Road in Pamplin. 

APRIL 28 

PRAISE AND PAINT – Farmville United Methodist Church, located at 212 High Street, will host a Praise and Paint Party on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 3 p.m. The idea is to celebrate God through poetry, gospel music, appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks, along with painting. All paint supplies will be included and there is a $25 cost to attend for adults, $15 for children ages 10 to 15. To register or if you have questions, text or call 804-240-1374. 

FREEDOM FUND BANQUET – The Buckingham Branch of the NAACP will host its Freedom Fund Banquet, observing 85 years in operation, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. That’ll happen at the Carter G. Woodson Education Complex, located at 40 Frank Harris Road in Dillwyn. The theme is “What Lies in Our Future?” with Linda Thomas, former NAACP state president, as the keynote speaker. SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES – The congregations of Cumberland and Guinea Presbyterian Churches hold services every Sunday. The Guinea service is at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 1176 Guinea Road in Farmville. The Cumberland service is held at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, beginning every Sunday at 11:15 a.m. 

TRIUMPH BAPTIST CHURCH – Triumph Baptist Church, located at 2756 Darlington Heights Road in Prince Edward County, welcomes everyone to services each Sunday. CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH – Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, welcomes a new pastor, Jeffery Schroeder. Sunday School is at 10 a.m., with worship services at 11:15 a.m. Outside worship is available, by tuning to 1620 AM on the radio. 

EXERCISE CLASS – Payne Memorial Church, located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, holds an exercise class every Monday and Thursday at 9 a.m. It’s free and all are welcome to attend.

HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP – Maysville Baptist Church, located at 13327 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Courthouse, hosts a Homeschool Support Group the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The purpose of this group is to provide support and connection for homeschooling families in the area. There is no childcare provided. Anyone with questions can call 434-414-5292. 

ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT – An Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Milnwood Avenue in Farmville. NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH – New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin will hold worship services on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:45 a.m. Sunday School will be held every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH – Heritage Baptist Church, located at 700 Milnwood Road in Farmville holds services each Sunday morning, with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Worship Service at 11 a.m. A fellowship with donuts and coffee is held from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend. 

SOUP FOR THE SOUL – Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold “Soup for the Soul” the third Tuesday of every month, beginning at 10 a.m. Church members prepare soup to be taken out to those who need a visit. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH FARMVILLE — First Baptist Church located at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Farmville hosts Sunday worship at 11 a.m. each Sunday. The Rev. Dr. James P. Ashton leads the services. At this time, face masks and social distancing are required inside of the sanctuary.

DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING — The Buckingham County Democratic Committee meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Agricultural Building in Buckingham County. PIEDMONT CHURCH OF CHRIST — Piedmont Church of Christ located at 1405 North Main St., Farmville holds Bible study at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and the church service starts 10:30 a.m. They have Bible study on Sunday nights at 5 p.m. and a Bible study at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights. The church has a free clothing giveaway on Thursdays from 1- 3 p.m. weather permitting.

PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH — Pisgah Baptist Church located at 202 Pisgah Road, Rice welcomes everyone each Sunday for Worship. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and worship starts at 11 a.m.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP — Farmville United Methodist Church (FUMC) is offering a Grief Support Group for those who have suffered recent losses or losses long ago. This is an ecumenical group welcoming anyone who has experienced a loss. The group meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at FUMC, 212 High St. Participation in the discussion while attending the sessions is optional. CHURCH SERVICES — Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland offers three options to worship on Sundays: inside service at 10 a.m., masks are optional; 10 a.m. radio parking lot service on 89.7 FM. and YouTube service later Sunday afternoon. 

FARMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH — Farmville Baptist Church at 132 N. Main St. holds Bible study at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday, followed at 11 a.m. by worship. FARMVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH — Farmville Presbyterian Church at 200 West Third St. holds in-service worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday with Rev. Dr. Pete Smith. The church also livestreams their church Facebook page and posts services on YouTube (search for the church name). FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Delma’s Pantry in Cumberland County will have curbside food distribution at Delma’s Pantry the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. Senior boxes will be given out at the distributions.

VETERANS SERVICES — The American Legion Accredited Veterans Service Officers are available to see veterans and their family members at the Farmville VFW from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Veteran Service Officers may be reached at (434) 414-6504.

OLD GREEN BAPTIST — Old Green Baptist Church holds outdoor and indoor worship services at 11 a.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month until further notice. The Rev. Samuel F. Trent is the pastor.

MEMOIR WRITING GROUP – The group, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, encourages new people to join. The meetings take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Farmville Library’s main meeting room. Call Joan at (434)-607-1576 for more information. 

WORSHIP AND THE WORD – Appomattox Assembly of God meets every Sunday for a Worship and the Word service, beginning at 11 a.m. The church, led by new pastor Mark Bartow, is located at 1225 Confederate Boulevard in Appomattox.
