APRIL 19 

MOAA MEETING – The MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) will hold a self-pay luncheon and program on Friday, April 19, beginning at 12:30 p.m. That’ll be at Riverside Cafe, located at 522 N. Main St. in Farmville. All active/former/retired military officers are invited, along with their spouses and guests. 

CLOTHING GIVEAWAY – Heritage Baptist Church, located at 700 Milnwood Road in Farmville, will hold a clothing giveaway on Friday, April 19, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be clothes for children, men and women, along with bedding and linen. 

PLAY PERFORMANCE – The Waterworks Players Community Theatre will perform the play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” by Tennessee Williams on Friday, April 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 each and available online at waterworksplayers.org/buytickets. 

APRIL 20

MENTAL HEALTH WALK – Take A Walk With Us, a group focused on mental health, addiction and fentanyl awareness, will hold a support walk in Cumberland County on Saturday, April 20, starting at 11 a.m. The group will meet in front of the Cumberland schools, right off Anderson Highway. Everyone is invited to come walk in support of the project.

FREE HOTDOG LUNCH – In honor of National Children and Youth Month, American Legion Post #32 will sponsor a free hotdog lunch on Saturday, April 20. The event will run from noon to 2 p.m. with activity bags given out to kids. This will happen at the Farmville Lion’s Club Park, with food donated by Merk’s Place. 

PASTORAL INSTALLATION – Oak Grove Baptist Church, located at 2083 S. James Madison Highway in Farmville, will hold a pastoral installation service for Pastoral-Elect Rev. Kevin L. Bolden Sr. on Saturday, April 20. That begins at 2 p.m. The guest pastor will be Rev. Larry Smith of Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Cumberland, with music provided by the Zion Baptist Gospel Chorus of Dillwyn. 

PROSPECT MEAL FUNDRAISER – The Prospect Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a spaghetti supper fundraiser on Saturday, April 20 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. That’ll take place at the Prospect Firehouse, located at 45 Campbell Hill Road in the Village of Prospect. The meal will include spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert, tea and lemonade. The cost is a donation at the door. Sauce by the quart will also be available for a $8 donation. 

CRUISE IN — The Heart of Virginia Auto Club will hold its first cruise in of the season on Saturday, April 20, at the parking lot by Tractor Supply in Farmville. Bring your classic or antique car to the show or just drop by and check out all the cars. The Cruise in starts at 5 p.m. and runs till dusk. There will be a 50/50 raffle. The club meets the second Monday each month at Merk’s Place in Farmville. Eat in at 6 p.m., meeting at 7 p.m.

FREE CONCERT – Christian country music artist Joe McAlister, accompanied by his full band, will perform in a free concert at Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 7 p.m. The church is located at 1835 Cumberland Road.

APRIL 21 

YOUTH SUNDAY SERVICE – New Store Baptist Church, located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville, will hold a Friends & Family Youth Sunday Service, followed by a spaghetti fellowship dinner on Sunday, April 21, beginning at 11 a.m.

APRIL 22

DEMOCRATIC MEETING – The Prince Edward Democratic Committee will meet on Monday, April 22 in the Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. 

DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS — The Buckingham County Democratic Committee has called a caucus for Monday April 22 at 6 PM inside at Ellis Acres Park located at 242 Camden Street Dillwyn, Va.  Doors open at 5 PM and close at 6 PM for the caucus, which is for members of the Buckingham County Democratic Committee or those willing to sign the Declaration Form.  The goal is to select 3 delegates and 1 alternate to the Fifth District Convention to be held at the Fluvanna County High School in Palmyra at 11 AM on May 18, 2024. 

APRIL 23

CONSERVATION MEETING – The Piedmont Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 11 a.m. The meeting will be in the conference room of the Prince Edward County Agriculture building, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. 

HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING – The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, April 23 at the Farmville Train Station. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will feature Jimmy Hurt giving a Powerpoint presentation on the French’s Church that was located in Kingsville. The group will discuss the church history and the reported 70 missing graves of French soldiers from the Revolutionary War period. 

APRIL 25 

TASTE OF FARMVILLE – The Farmville Rotary Club will hold its annual Taste of Farmville on Thursday, April 25. There will be one session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., then a second running from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will be held at the Fireman’s Sports Arena on Zion Hill Road, just past Prince Edward County High. Tickets are $20 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be bought at both Benchmark Community Banks, both Citizen Bank & Trust, as well as Piedmont Real Estate. APRIL 26 

FREE CONCERT – The Rosedale Chorale, from Rosedale Bible College, will give a concert at Trinity Church in Prospect on Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m. The choir will lead a choral worship service using compositions from the classics to contemporary. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call David Edmonston at (434) 390-8334. Rosedale Bible College is a Mennonite two-year college located near Columbus, Ohio.

APRIL 27 

CRUISE-IN – There will be a cruise-in to benefit the Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first 75 vehicles will get dash plaques, with food available for purchase and a 50/50 raffle. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. The firehouse is located at 2673 Darlington Heights Road in Pamplin. 

CANDIDATE FORUM – A forum for Democratic candidates in the 5th Congressional District will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. That’ll be at New Flame Church of God in Christ, located at 308 S. Virginia Street STE B in Farmville. All four candidates have promised to attend and it is open for anyone to attend.

APRIL 28 

FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – Monroe Baptist Church in Rice will hold their annual Family and Friends Day on Sunday, April 28, starting at 11 a.m. A light lunch will be served following the service. 

PRAISE AND PAINT – Farmville United Methodist Church, located at 212 High Street, will host a Praise and Paint Party on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 3 p.m. The idea is to celebrate God through poetry, gospel music, appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks, along with painting. FREEDOM FUND BANQUET – The Buckingham Branch of the NAACP will host its Freedom Fund Banquet, observing 85 years in operation, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. That’ll happen at the Carter G. Woodson Education Complex, located at 40 Frank Harris Road in Dillwyn. The theme is “What Lies in Our Future?” with Linda Thomas, former NAACP state president, as the keynote speaker. MEMBERSHIP MEETING – Historic Buckingham invites the community to attend their Spring Membership Meeting on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 2 p.m. That’ll take place at Maysville Presbyterian Church at Buckingham Court House. The speaker will be the former chief of the Monacan Indian Nation, Kenneth Branham, who will share his tribe’s history here in Central Virginia. The church is located at 12945 W. James Anderson Highway.

CHURCH ANNIVERSARY – New Bethel Baptist Church, located at 14167 Farmville Road in Meherrin will celebrate their 149th church anniversary on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 3 p.m. The guest preacher will be Rev. Calvin Gray, pastor of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, accompanied by his choir and ushers. Dinner will be served after the service. 

Herald Community Calendar Ongoing Events

SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES – The congregations of Cumberland and Guinea Presbyterian Churches hold services every Sunday. The Guinea service is at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 1176 Guinea Road in Farmville. The Cumberland service is held at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, beginning every Sunday at 11:15 a.m. 

TRIUMPH BAPTIST CHURCH – Triumph Baptist Church, located at 2756 Darlington Heights Road in Prince Edward County, welcomes everyone to services each Sunday. Sunday school at 10:00 a.m. followed by Prayer/Praise and worship service at 11:00 a.m. Worship Service is live streamed on the church Facebook page.  Rev. Morris Garner is the pastor.

CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH – Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, welcomes a new pastor, Jeffery Schroeder. Sunday School is at 10 a.m., with worship services at 11:15 a.m. Outside worship is available, by tuning to 1620 AM on the radio. 

EXERCISE CLASS – Payne Memorial Church, located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, holds an exercise class every Monday and Thursday at 9 a.m. It’s free and all are welcome to attend.

HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP – Maysville Baptist Church, located at 13327 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Courthouse, hosts a Homeschool Support Group the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The purpose of this group is to provide support and connection for homeschooling families in the area. ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT – An Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Milnwood Avenue in Farmville. NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH – New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin will hold worship services on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:45 a.m. Sunday School will be held every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH – Heritage Baptist Church, located at 700 Milnwood Road in Farmville holds services each Sunday morning, with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Worship Service at 11 a.m. A fellowship with donuts and coffee is held from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend. 

SOUP FOR THE SOUL – Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold “Soup for the Soul” the third Tuesday of every month, beginning at 10 a.m. Church members prepare soup to be taken out to those who need a visit. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH FARMVILLE — First Baptist Church located at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Farmville hosts Sunday worship at 11 a.m. each Sunday. The Rev. Dr. James P. Ashton leads the services. At this time, face masks and social distancing are required inside of the sanctuary.

DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING — The Buckingham County Democratic Committee meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Agricultural Building in Buckingham County. The church has a free clothing giveaway on Thursdays from 1- 3 p.m. weather permitting.

PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH — Pisgah Baptist Church located at 202 Pisgah Road, Rice welcomes everyone each Sunday for Worship. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and worship starts at 11 a.m.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP — Farmville United Methodist Church (FUMC) is offering a Grief Support Group for those who have suffered recent losses or losses long ago. This is an ecumenical group welcoming anyone who has experienced a loss. The group meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at FUMC, 212 High St. Participation in the discussion while attending the sessions is optional. CHURCH SERVICES — Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland offers three options to worship on Sundays: inside service at 10 a.m., masks are optional; 10 a.m. radio parking lot service on 89.7 FM. and YouTube service later Sunday afternoon. 

FARMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH — Farmville Baptist Church at 132 N. Main St. holds Bible study at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday, followed at 11 a.m. by worship. FARMVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH — Farmville Presbyterian Church at 200 West Third St. holds in-service worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday with Rev. Dr. Pete Smith. The church also livestreams their church Facebook page and posts services on YouTube (search for the church name). FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Delma’s Pantry in Cumberland County will have curbside food distribution at Delma’s Pantry the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. Senior boxes will be given out at the distributions.

VETERANS SERVICES — The American Legion Accredited Veterans Service Officers are available to see veterans and their family members at the Farmville VFW from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Veteran Service Officers may be reached at (434) 414-6504.

OLD GREEN BAPTIST — Old Green Baptist Church holds outdoor and indoor worship services at 11 a.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month until further notice. The Rev. Samuel F. Trent is the pastor.
