Hampden-Sydney College has designated its men’s lacrosse home game against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Bridgewater College on Saturday, April 13, in support of the One Love Foundation. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
One Love Foundation is a national non-profit with the goal of ending relationship abuse. It empowers young people with tools and resources to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities. The Foundation was founded to honor the tragic death of Yeardley Love by engaging young people through compelling, relatable films and honest conversations around healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors. Yeardley Love was tragically killed by her ex-boyfriend on May 3, 2010 just three weeks shy of graduating from The University of Virginia. Her family learned during the trial that there were signs Yeardley was in an abusive relationship.
Julie Myers, the Chief Executive Officer of the One Love Foundation since 2023 and former women’s lacrosse head coach at the University of Virginia (1996-2023), will attend the game and speak at halftime. She directed the UVA program for 28 years, taking her teams to the postseason each year except for 2020 when NCAA spring championships were canceled due to the pandemic. Myers’ all-time record at UVA stands at 349-181 (.659), and her win total ranks fifth overall in NCAA Division I women’s collegiate lacrosse history and 11th overall for all NCAA Divisions. As a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach, Myers was associated with the UVA program for 37 years.
Residents are asked to come out and support the team in raising awareness against Relationship Violence. One Love Shirts are available for $15 by visiting: https://joinonelovegameday.org
