Jennings Custis, Headmaster of Fuqua Upper School, government teacher, and organizer of the Students for Model General Assembly, was the guest speaker of the Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, during their March 9 meeting. The title of Custis’ presentation was Virginians in the Revolutionary War. He began his talk with the idea that “war is fought better with words than physical fighting” and focused his presentation on Dabney Carr, who was born in 1743 and grew up to be friends with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Of note, Custis described the dedication of Martha Washington to George as shown by following him during the war from camp to camp. The meeting was held at the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library in Farmville. Pictured are, from left, Regent Margaret Atkins, Custis and Second Vice-Regent Donna Browning.
