Betty Petty, of Red House, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24. She was the devoted daughter of the late James Sydnor Reynolds Sr. and Annie Jones Reynolds. Betty lived her entire life in the homeplace from where she was born. 

She was preceded in passing by her husband, Linus Page Petty; two brothers, Jimmy Reynolds and Kenny Wayne Reynolds. 

Betty is survived by her four cherished children; Anne Page Petty (Denny) of Forest, Mark Petty (Marcia) of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, David Petty of Old Well and Matthew Petty (Sharon) of Appomattox; dear grandsons, Daniel Petty (Caity) and James Petty; and beloved great grandson, Greyson Petty. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory three nieces and other dear family members, including cousins. 

A native of Charlotte County, Betty Anne, for those that fondly knew her, dedicated her life to the most noble causes of family and community. She led and organized, over the course of many years, countless family gatherings and reunions. Betty Anne brought people together to the Reynolds home place to celebrate all of life’s important occasions, teaching the generations therein the importance of family ties. She cherished visits with family and friends, always calling out, “come back and see me,” when parting. Betty Anne enjoyed hosting the “Petty Party” at Christmas time for many years. She had a keen understanding of the importance of history and tradition. 

Early in life, Betty Anne had sparked a keen interest in her family tree and shared the depths of her knowledge with relations residing both near and far. She was a grand storyteller with a keen sense of humor and loved a good laugh. Betty Anne was a world traveler, and a loyal friend. She kept pen pals with family members across the entire country and dutifully corresponded over the course of many years. Betty Anne was a historian and loved Virginia history. 

Betty Anne graduated from Randolph-Henry High School and after marriage went on to organize volunteering and elections for the community at the Red House Community Building. At a young age she accepted the Lord, was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church for over 80 years where she served as clerk and worked on various committees. She strived to keep clear, accurate records and always referred to the church constitution for guidance. Betty Anne enjoyed social events with the Joy Group, The Red Hat Society and was an active member of the A.P.V.A. Her dearest hobbies were gardening, reading, current events and the keeping of treasured family recipes passed down through generations. 

The gift of her presence in our family has been and will continue to be immeasurable. She will be both endlessly missed and continually honored by many for the rest of time. 

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the team of first responders at the Red House Fire Department, 9467 Red House Road, Red House, VA 23963. In lieu of flowers, her family kindly recommends contributions in Betty Anne’s memory to be directed to the same. 

A Celebration of Life for Betty Petty will be held at her home, 129 Lawyers Road, Red House, VA 23963 on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. Betty loved spring colors, and her favorite color is pink.
