Elizabeth “Betty” Josepha Maria Kuitems SchaubachElizabeth “Betty” Josepha Maria Kuitems Schaubach, 90, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 5. She was born on Feb. 13, 1934 in Highland Park, Michigan. She attended the College of William and Mary and was employed at Fort Eustis and Fort Pickett. She married Eddie Martin Schaubach Jr. in April 1956 and moved to her beloved home in Crewe.

Betty was a pillar of the Crewe community devoting her time as a member of the Garden Club, Friends of the Library and Crewe Junior Women’s Club. She loved to spend days playing golf, tending to her flower gardens, creating floral arrangements and playing bridge with her ladies. She spent countless hours in front of her sewing machine fashioning garments. Betty opened a nursery school in her home for children in the Nottoway community, sharing her love for learning and leaving a lasting impression on young minds. The pathway to learning was likened to a “secret garden” draped with her bright, blossoming flowers.

She loved her family beyond measure. Her home was filled with pictures of her loved ones; and she always welcomed her family home to celebrate holidays and special occasions with open arms and a warm smile all her own. She was affectionately known as “Omie” by her grandchildren and many others who knew her. She attended countless ball games, swim meets, dance recitals and concert band events to encourage her children and grandchildren to follow their passions and dreams. She enriched the lives of her family and leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Kuitems and her loving husband, Eddie Martin Schaubach Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Tom Schaubach (Susan) and Chris Schaubach (Diane); her daughter Liesje Alexander (Charly); grandchildren, Leah Schaubach (Polo), Kirsten Bowen (Bobby), Lauren Schaubach, Kenna Schaubach, Ted Alexander, Samantha Schaubach and Sam Alexander (Pam); and four great-grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. All who wish to honor her life are invited to hang a hummingbird feeder at their home. We know that she will be with us all in spirit.
