Arvonia native Haden VonCanon was one of two Hampden-Sydney runners to set school records, as the Tigers competed at the Blue & Silver Challenge this weekend.
The freshman VonCanon set a new school record time of 2:03:32 in the outdoor 800-meter run, finishing third of 15 runners in the event. Meanwhile, fellow Hampden-Sydney freshman Kam Maldonado set a new school record of 37:14:39 in the outdoor 10,000-meter run to finish third as well.
Hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, teams lined up to compete Saturday at TowneBank Stadium. Hampden-Sydney junior Kade Minton barely missed setting a school record of his own on the day, with a time of 4:18:56 in the outdoor 1500-meter run. He finished 15 out of 22 in the race. Minton’s time in the 1500 was barely off the record time of 4:18.07, set by Devin Kohout in 2022. Also competing in the 1500 was sophomore Winston Ransone, who finished 18th with a time of 4:20:32.
Beyond Arvonia, other scores
Hampden-Sydney had several other runners competing this weekend. In the 800, the team had freshman Jackson Herndon, who finished fourth with a time of 2:03:94, seconds behind VonCanon. Kade Minon also competed in the 800, finishing ninth with a time of 2:10:77. Also competing were freshmen Dylan Evans (2:19.04, 11th) and Davis Mills (2:26.93, 12th), juniors Kevin Busch (2:28.73.72, 13th) and Zach Eason (2:40.62, 14th), along with freshman James Cosenza (2:40.79, 15th). Herndon, Evans, Mills, Eason and Cosenza each ran new personal collegiate-best times at the outdoor distance.
What’s next?
Hampden-Sydney will compete again at the WildCat Track Festival hosted by Randolph College on Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. at WildCat Stadium in Lynchburg.
