Tigers compete in final swim competition of the year

Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) finished eighth out of ten Division II and III teams at the two-day Pacer Invitational. The Tigers finished with 332 points overall, which was 240 points more than ninth place. Roanoke College finished first on the men’s side while Division II University of North Carolina at Pembroke finished tops on the women’s side.

In the first relay of the invitational, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Tigers finished in 13th as junior Quinn Hardimon, junior Brandon Hyde, freshman Owen Renfrow, and freshman Peter Gonzalez, finished with a time of 1:46.49. H-SC also finished 15th in the event as senior Patrick Duffy, junior Cole Renfrow, junior Charles Adams, and freshman Ben Gerber, posted a time of 1:53.06.

H-SC posted a second straight 13th place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, as junior Matt Brooks, Duffy, Hyde, and Gonzalez posted a time of 1:35.71. Finishing right behind in 14th was Cole Renfrow, Owen Renfrow, Gerber, and freshman Ronan Self, with a time of 1:40.56.

Hardimon, Hyde, Brooks, and Owen Renfrow placed 13th in the 400 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:00.59. Duffy, Adam, Cole Renfrow, and Gerber finished 15th in the event with a time of 4:16.71.

The Tigers only had one group participating in the 800 Yard Freestyle as a time of 8:02.61 from Hardimon, Brooks, Gonzalez, and Gerber put them in 11th place.

In the final relay of the invitational, the 400 Yard Freestyle, Hardimon, Hyde, Brooks, and Gonzalez placed 13th with a time of 3:28.89. Duffy, Adams, Cole Renfrow, and Owen Renfrow placed 15th in the event with a time of 3:39.04.

Hardimon earned some early points for H-SC, taking 16th place in the 500 Yard Freestyle, posting a time of 5:03.66. Also finishing in the event was Brooks in 27th, Adams in 29th, junior Kevin Busch in 32nd, and junior Carson Mann in 33rd.

Owen Renfrow was the top finisher in the 200 Yard IM, as his time of 2:10.43 was good for 23rd place. Behind Renfrow was Gonzalez in 28th, Gerber in 31st, Self in 32, and sophomore Jackson Piazza in 33rd.

Brooks topped the Tigers in the 50 Yard Freestyle, finishing 36th with a time of 23.82 seconds. Hyde finished 41st with a 25.04 second time, freshman Mason Brooking grabbed 46th with a time of 26.83 seconds. Busch finished 48th with a time of 27.36 seconds and Mann rounded out the Tigers finishers, with a time of 29.57 seconds, good for 53rd.

Owen Renfrow was the lone participant in the 400 Yard IM, placing 19th with a time of 4:43.84.

Gonzalez was the top finisher for H-SC in the 100 Yard Butterfly, posting a time of 58.19 seconds which was good for 28th. Finishing behind Gonzalez for H-SC was Hyde in 31st, Self in 32nd, Gerber in 34th, and Adams in 37th.

Hardimon grabbed 26th place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, topping all Tigers in the event with a time of 1:51.45. Following Hardimon was Brooks who finished in 36th, Adams who finished 41st, Cole Renfrow who finished 42nd, Duffy who finished 46th, Self in 47th, Busch in 49th, Brooking in 51st, and Mann in 55th.

H-SC had three finishes back-to-back-to-back in the 200 Yard Butterfly. Gonzalez was the top of the three in 22nd place, posting a time of 2:15.33. Behind Gonzalez was Self with a time of 2:21.70 followed by Adams’ time of 2:22.66.

A 16th place finish by Hardimon in the 100 Yard Backstroke got some more points on the board for H-SC, with Hardimon posting a 56.76 second time. Finishing behind Hardimon was Hyde in 30th, Gerber in 36th, Duffy in 37th, and Piazza in 38th.

The Tigers got two point finishers in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, with Owen Renfrow finishing 20th with a time of 1:04.59 and Cole Renfrow finishing 22nd with a time of 1:05.49. Piazza was the only other Tiger in the event, finishing in 29th place with a time of 1:18.02.

Brooks topped all Tigers in the 100 Yard Freestyle, finishing 38th with a time of 51.88 seconds. Also finishing in the event was Gonzalez in 42nd, Cole Renfrow in 45th, Duffy in 47th, Busch in 52nd, Brooking in 53rd, and Mann in 58th.

Hyde was the top of three participants in the 200 Yard Backstroke, finishing 18th with a time of 2:15.35 to pick up points. Also picking up points for the Tigers were Gerber in 21st with a time of 2:245.57, and Duffy in 22nd with a time of 2:28.70.

In the final individual event of the invitational, Owen Renfrow was the top finisher for H-SC with a time of 2:23.02, placing him in 18th. Cole Renfrow finished 22nd with a time of 2:36.60 to also earn the Tigers points, with Piazza finishing 26th with a time of 2:52.02.

The Tigers will have a long break before traveling to Salem to take on Roanoke College on Jan. 13. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Salem YMCA.
