Earlier this month, Virginia House of Delegates member John McGuire was elected to serve in the State Senate. One week later, he declared his candidacy for Congress. That didn’t go over well with all of the Republican Committees in his region. One of them has already issued a resolution of no confidence in the lawmaker. 

“John McGuire was elected to serve Virginia State Senate District 10 with the promise to fulfill his term,” the statement from the Goochland County Republican Committee reads. “It has become evident that John McGuire’s convention race was characterized by his personal ambitions and not by a desire to improve the welfare of the people he was elected to represent. John McGuire has failed to honor his commitment and has broken his promise, thereby undermining the trust placed in him by the electorate.” 

The Goochland statement is referring to the Republican convention back in June. By an overwhelming majority, Republicans in State Senate District 10 made McGuire the District 10 party nominee back. In a field of four Republicans, McGuire took 63% of the vote. 

If you’re wondering what District 10 is, well, that’s because it’s brand new. Drawn up as part of the latest round of redistricting, it covers at least parts of 11 counties. That includes portions of Hanover, Louisa, Prince Edward and Henrico counties, to go with all of Buckingham, Cumberland, Amelia, Appomattox, Fluvanna, Goochland and Powhatan. Residents in those counties then went to the polls on Nov. 7 and elected him to office. 

John McGuire responds

But now, less than a month later, McGuire wants to represent Buckingham, Prince Edward, Charlotte and the rest of Southside. In Wednesday’s statement, McGuire said since winning the nomination back in June, he’s been asked repeatedly to challenge Good.
“I’m answering the call,” McGuire said, adding that he also felt it was important to have someone in Good’s seat who treated residents well.
He’s also earned his first endorsement on the campaign trail. Veterans for America First announced their endorsement of McGuire right before Thanksgiving.
“John McGuire is an America First Candidate, a Father, Navy SEAL, and Business Owner seeking to take a stand for all Virginians against the liberal agendas our nation is plagued with,” said VFAF founding member Vlad Lemets. “We need candidates like John McGuire in Congress to Save Virginia and Save America. With Trump since he came down the escalator, no gimmick and no nonsense Conservative soldier.”
