Like many other local fire departments, the Hampden Sydney Fire Department is looking for volunteers who are willing to give their time to serve their community.
Due to its location, the fire department has a lot of Hampden Sydney College students volunteering. But that can cause a lot of rotation on who is available. According to the department’s president, Christopher Call, he hopes to get more local community members involved as the department serves a large number of residents. The department stays busy as it runs an average of 700 to 1,000 calls for service each year with these calls spreading over a 75-square-mile fire district and a 120-square-mile EMS district.
When it comes to training or previous experience, the Hampden Sydney Fire Department trains all its volunteers.
“Wave a great training program and are willing to train anyone who wants to volunteer,” said Call. “We’re looking for people who are dedicated to helping the community.”

For training, volunteers will receive training in basics, CPR and safety as well as go through the state’s fire safety program. As volunteers get more comfortable, they can move up to different positions. According to Call, all volunteers are where they want to be and where they are most comfortable.
When it comes to the different positions, Hampden Sydney is looking to fill any and all of them. Volunteers can choose to participate as a firefighter or part of the emergency medical services (EMS). There are also some volunteers who do both roles.
“It’s very rewarding to help out the community,” said Call. “When people come they can really see how great the need is as there is a tremendous need. We’re definitely in need of all the help we can get.”
