Hampden-Sydney College claims first swim meet win

Juniors Quinn Hardimon and Cody Carnes both took three event victories as Hampden-Sydney College defeated Randolph College in the opening meet of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) slate 145-112, this week at the Bradley W. Bateman Aquatic Center.

The Tigers picked up a win in the final relay of the night, as Hardimon, Carnes, junior Brandon Hyde, and Matt Brooks posted a time of 3:31.60 in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Junior Charles Adams, junior Kevin Busch, junior Cole Renfrow, and freshman Ronan Self placed third in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, posting a time of 3:57.48. H-SC grabbed second and third in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, with Hyde, Brooks, and freshman Owen Renfrow and Peter Gonzalez, taking second with a 1:47.06, .02 seconds off of first, and Cole Renfrow, senior Patrick Duffy, sophomore Jackson Piazza, and freshman Ben Gerber  in third with a 1:55.34.

Hardimon grabbed a win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, posting a time of 10:52.24, over a minute clear of teammate and runner-up in the event, Gonzalez’s time of 12:02.64. Brooks topped the Tigers in the 200 Yard Freestyle, placing second with a time of 1:59.12. Adams finished in third with a time of 2:04.09, followed up by Busch in fourth with a 2:24.48 time.

Hyde grabbed an event win in the 50 Yard Backstroke, posting a time of 28.34, one second clear of second place. Self took home fourth place, with a time of 30.46, followed up in fifth place by Piazza who posted a time of 31.43.

Owen Renfrow earned his first college event victory in the 50 Yard Breaststoke, posting a time of 30.18 seconds. He was followed by his brother Cole in third place with a time of 30.46 seconds.

Hampden-Sydney College took home the first three places in the 100 Yard Butterfly, with Carnes taking the top spot with a time of 56.10 seconds. He was followed up in second by Gerber, who finished with a time of 1:00.28, and Self finished third with a time of 1:02.02.

Duffy claimed a third place finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle, posting a time of 24.94. Gonzalez finished fourth with a time of 25.54, and Piazza’s time of 28.01 was good for sixth place. Less than a second separated both Carnes and Brooks in the 100 Yard Freestyle, with Carnes finishing first with a 51.07 time and Brooks in second with a 51.92 second time. In sixth place was Self with his time of 1:00.53. 

Hardimon took his second individual win of the evening in the 100 Yard Backstroke, posting a time of 59.83 seconds. He was followed by Duffy in fourth and Gerber in fifth, with times of 1:09.38 and 1:16.02.

Cole Renfrow topped his brother Owen in the 100 Yard Breastroke, finishing second with a time of 1:07.85 and Owen posted a time of 1:08.40 to finish in third. Piazza posted a time of 1:14.99 in the event to finish in fifth.

Hardimon earned his third win of the evening in the 500 Yard Freestyle, posting a time of 5:30.35. Busch took home third in the event with a time of 6:52.47.

Carnes grabbed his third win of the evening in the next event, taking top spot in the 50 Yard Butterfly, posting a time of 25.48. In fourth was Adams with his time of 28.50, followed up by Busch in fifth with a time of 32.11.

In the final individual event, Owen Renfrow took home third place in the 200 Yard IM, posting a time of 2:20.17. Gonzalez grabbed fifth place with a time of 2:27.72, and was followed by Gerber in sixth place who finished with a time of 2:29.98.

Up next for Hampden-Sydney College

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, November 3, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan University for another ODAC matchup. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
