Hampden-Sydney College senior right-handed pitcher Owen Tappy has been named to the 2023 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball First Team. He is the first starting pitcher to earn first team honors for the Tigers since 2012.
Tappy made 19 appearances this season with eight starts-seven of at least 8.0 innings-and four complete games. He compiled a 6-2 record on the mound with a 2.00 earned run average over 85.2 innings with 68 strikeouts and only 11 walks. Tappy led the ODAC in complete games (12th in NCAA Division III), strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.18, 27th nationally) and fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.16, 19th nationally), was second in innings pitched, third in ERA (36th nationally), fifth in strikeouts and tied for fifth in wins. Owen previously was named the ODAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the period April 10-16.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Owen, said 20th-year head coach Jeff Kinne. “He competed at a high level for us this season. The entire team feels he is the best pitcher in the ODAC, and this shows that our opponents felt the same. More importantly, the honor couldn’t go to a better person.”
For his career, Tappy made 54 appearances, including 10 starts and five complete games, with a record of 16-8, a 3.27 ERA, 179 innings pitched, 153 strikeouts and one save-tied for fifth in career wins and seventh in career strikeouts-and was a two-time ODAC Pitcher of the Week.
