ORDINATION SERVICES — Sharon Baptist Church located on Plank Road in Cumberland holds ordination services for Deacons-Elect, Sisters Ernestine Monroe and JoAnn Vaughan, at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 31. The Rev. Kern Gilliam delivers the ordination message. The Rev. R. Robert Jones, the church’s pastor, serves as worship leader. The Cumberland Deacons and Trustees Conference is in charge of the Acts of Ordination.

GROW YOUR OWN GROCERIES — The Prince Edward County Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville, hosts a grow your own groceries workshop series. The workshops are from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, Aug. 2, Aug. 9 and Aug. 16. Learn to plant your own microgreens, cook with sprouts, grow herbs and how to start your own windowsill garden using kitchen scraps. You must register and pay by Tuesday, July 26. Cost is $15. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT — National Night Out is set for Riverside Park in Farmville, 5- 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2. Festivities include informational displays from area first responders, churches, local civic organizations, as well as children’s activities and multiple vendors on site with food for sale.
BEEKEEPERS MEETING — The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Prince Edward County Extension Office located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville, next to Lowe’s. The program is a demonstration of honey extraction. Anyone who has bees or is interested in bees is welcome. F.A.C.E.S. COOKING DEMONSTRATION — The Prince Edward County Extension is having a F.A.C.E.S. cooking demonstration series. The demonstrations are from noon to 1 p.m., on Wednesdays, Aug. 3, Aug. 10 and Aug. 17 at F.A.C.E.S, located at 482 Commerce Road in Farmville. The demonstrations will cover nutrition and safety, cooking demos, recipes and meal preparation. You must register by Wednesday, July 27. GOLD MINING LISTENING SESSION — The Virginia Department of Energy hosts a listening session at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Buckingham Community Center located at 16266 N. James Madison Highway in Dillwyn. The purpose of this session is to receive public comment from community members as the state agency committee to the Gold Mining Workgroup evaluates the potential impacts of gold mining. BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT — There will be a back to school event on Thursday, August 4, at 5 p.m., at the Prince Edward Elks Lodge in Farmville. There will be motivational speakers, hot dogs and refreshments and free school supplies for kids in grades kindergarten through sixth. SUMMER NIGHT STARLIGHT — The Crewe Astronomy Club meets at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park from 8 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6 gazing at the stars and learning about the night sky using hi-tech telescopes positioned in front of the Visitor Center located at 6541 Saylers Creek Road in Rice. Guests will have the opportunity to look upon the red planet Mars, the planet Saturn with its beautiful rings and the planet Jupiter with its many moons. Zion Baptist Church located at 6277 Cartersville Road in New Canton holds a homecoming service at 11 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 7 with former Pastor Jerry Stewart as guest speaker. HOMECOMING AND REVIVAL — First Liberty Baptist Church in Dillwyn holds a homecoming service at 11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 7. The guest speaker is Co-Pastor Sandra James of Canaan Soul Station in Kents Store and she will be accompanied by her congregation. Lunch will be served immediately following the service. There will be no afternoon service. The church also holds a revival starting Monday, Aug. 8 through Wednesday, Aug. 10. Each night the prayer and praise service starts at 7 p.m. followed by worship service at 7:30 p.m. The guest revivalist is Elder Jason Lewis, associate pastor of the Temple of Deliverance, H.C.G., in Mineral. For the safety of all wearing a mask is required as well as social distancing and temperature checks.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING — The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society meets at 7 p.m.. Tuesday, Aug. 16. The meeting is at the Farmville Train Station on West Third Street. Kathreen Mirate, originally from the Philippines, now resides in Farmville and has recently released a book. She plans to introduce her new book and have copies for sale. The featured speaker is Nat Carter of Farmville. He plans a presentation on the Carter Family of Prince Edward County. The meeting is open to the public. There are drawings for various door prizes and refreshments will be available.

FIELD TO VASE — On Thursday, Aug. 18 the Prince Edward County Extension Office located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville is having a field to vase program from 9 to 11 a.m. Come prepared to be outside. WINE FESTIVAL — The Barksdale Cancer Foundation is holding its annual wine festival, “Miss Janie’s Sit & Sip,” from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at Osborne Street Park in Keysville. Organizers have booked four local wineries this year. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP — Farmville United Methodist Church (FUMC) is offering a Grief Support Group for those who have suffered recent losses or losses long ago. This is an ecumenical group welcoming anyone who has experienced a loss. FARMVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH — Farmville Presbyterian Church at 200 West Third St. holds in-service worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday. FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Delma’s Pantry in Cumberland County will have curbside food distribution at Cumberland Middle School the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. Senior boxes will be given out at the distributions.
VETERANS SERVICES — The American Legion Accredited Veterans Service Officers are available to see veterans and their family members at the Farmville VFW from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Veteran Service Officers may be reached at (434) 414-6504.
