To The Editor:

For those of you in Prince Edward County who think that we are out of the woods for contracting the coronavirus, you are sadly mistaken.

It has been my observation that far too many people are not adhering to the guidelines set by the CDC, by not keeping social distancing and not covering their faces with masks or bandannas.

The seriousness of this virus should not be treated like a political football. It is not a game. It’s caring about peoples’ lives and the wellbeing of our family, friends, and neighbors. If we don’t start taking heed to our healthcare professionals and scientists, this virus will be around a lot longer than we would like. The bad news is that until we get a handle on this coronavirus, we can never hope to get the economy back on track.

This is not the time for us to be complacent. When our actions or inactions have a negative effect on the wellbeing of the community as whole, we are not acting in accord with the precepts of our Judaeo Christian values, “Love thy Neighbor.”

Words alone are not enough. We must demonstrate our love for our neighbors and friends by wearing a mask in public and practicing social distancing.
