As Virginia continues to reopen we need to make sure our children are cared for safely.
Earlier this week I sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi urging her to include funding for child care in the next COVID-19 disaster relief bill.
I have also continued my work with Head Start, a program that provides vital services in the 5th District community and across the nation. We are working together to help our children get the tools they need as we get though the COVID-19 pandemic.
Next week the House will vote on the Great American Outdoors Act. This bipartisan legislation would fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and address the growing maintenance backlog on National Parks and other federal lands. This will benefit Virginia and ensure that the lands we treasure will be protected.
Passing this legislation will have significant and long-term positive impacts on our economy. Funding for this bill will support parks including Shenandoah National Park and the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
Throughout my time in Congress I have worked with Secretary Sonny Perdue and the USDA to support farmers, producers, and rural communities in the 5th District. I created the 5th District Agricultural Advisory Committee to discuss the issues our farmers face. This week, the Town of Halifax received $126,000 in grants and loans through the USDA Rural Development Program to purchase public works vehicles.
Virginia is beginning to see the positive effects of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The USMCA is a great win for 5th District farmers and consumers. The deal will hasten economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this week, President Trump signed an executive order with regard to the U.S. trade relationship with Hong Kong. I applaud the actions taken by President Trump. The recent actions taken by the Chinese Communist Government fundamentally undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and constitute an extraordinary threat to the people of Hong Kong.
