After dampening area Easter celebrations, the COVID-19 pandemic has now taken area fireworks displays away from the Fourth of July.
During the Farmville Town Council meeting on Wednesday, April 8, council members agreed to not hold the annual Fourth of July celebration due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty as to when the global health crisis will cease.
The town’s Fourth of July celebration has historically been held July 3 at the Farmville Regional Airport.
In addition to the Town of Farmville, the annual Fourth of July celebration provided by Meherrin Volunteer Fire and Rescue will not be held.
The celebration has been held for 34 years and is made possible by donations from local businesses. In its Facebook announcement, the department noted, “With the current state of the economy and local businesses doing everything possible to keep their doors open, we do not feel that it is appropriate to solicit donations.”
