Buckingham County is now the 11^th county in the state with the most COVID-19 infection per capita as the number of coronavirus cases jumped to 22 after Wednesday morning’s update from the Virginia Department of Health.

Buckingham continues to have the most cases in the area but Prince Edward’s 15 cases have proved more fatal as the county has recorded two deaths related to the virus thus far. The county is listed as having an outbreak in a long-term care facility.

The only other county in the area to experience an increase in cases is Charlotte County which moved from four to five cases.

Lunenburg County officials are reporting a fourth case in the county. That case has not been reflected in Wednesday’s update. Often, the daily morning updates can trail county information by a couple days.

The state-wide totals show Virginia now has had 6,500 cases of the virus so far with 1,048 hospitalizations and 195 deaths from the virus.

The tracking dashboard from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association shows that 752 COVID-19 patients hospitalized for the illness have been discharged, so far. Currently, there are 394 patients in ICU and 234 on a ventilator. The state still has 76% of its ventilators available and 5,617 hospital beds.

Virginia’s peak use of medical resources, according to a model from Washington University, is currently projected to be April 28. The projected number of deaths in Virginia has actually risen from 830 to 1,188 in the latest update.
