Dear Editor:

There is a concern in Farmville about a statue put on High Street by the Daughters of the Confederacy many, many years ago. It’s a rather non-descriptive statue and bears no inscription and does not pay homage to any person or group. It is my understanding that the Town of Farmville does not provide any maintenance or upkeep of the statue or the grounds surrounding it.

The current climate of budget tightening and fiscal management has left me to ponder a particular point. Fiscal mismanagement and wasted funds are two things that should not be happenings in today’s uncertain economy. The Town of Farmville should not appropriate any funds to remove this statue. Towns funds could be better used for paving streets, better lighting in poorly lit streets, sidewalks and etc.
