Prince Edward County High School’s varsity girls and boys swimming teams each placed second at the 2020 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region 2A Swimming Championship Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex Aquatics Center.
Bruton High School produced the winning girls and boys teams, earning 390 and 257 points, respectively, in fields of six schools. The Lady Eagles generated 232 points, and the Eagles scored 184.
Prince Edward had relay teams qualify for states in five different events, along with 11 individuals in 10 different individual events.
Lady Eagles and Eagles Head Coach Elise Hemmer said she was proud of her teams’ finishes.
“They really did great,” she said. “There’s a lot of nerves going into it. It’s also a yard pool, and we swim meter pools all season, so that’s kind of a little bit of an unknown, and next year I’m hoping to try to get into a yard pool so that way it’s not so different.”
The 2020 VHSL Class 2 Swimming Championship is set for Thursday, Feb. 20, at SwimRVA in Richmond.
Senior Renee Stimpert and junior Josephine Hemmer each qualified in all four of their events. Stimpert competed in the girls 50-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She also joined Hemmer on the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Hemmer’s individual events included the 200 free and 500 free.
Joining them on the 200 medley relay are senior Kevynne Dimanno, sophomore Alyson Lucas and freshman Julianna Swanson as an alternate.
The other members of the 400 free relay are Lucas, freshman Carrington Detrick and junior Callyn Vogel as an alternate.
Also qualifying for states was the girls 200 free relay, featuring Vogel, junior Sierra Mottley, senior Timara Smith, Detrick and Lucas as an alternate.
The state-qualifying boys 200 medley relay team includes sophomore Joshua Tobias, sophomore Griffin Beach, sophomore Matthew Swanson, senior Harry Lettner Rust and freshman Jacob Strickler as an alternate.
Populating the qualifying boys 200 free relay team are Rust, Strickler, Tobias, Matthew Swanson and Beach as an alternate.
Sophomore Charles Swanson made the state cut individually in the boys 200 free and the 500 free. Tobias also made the cut in the 200 individual medley and the 100 back.
Smith qualified for states in the girls 100 butterfly, and Lucas qualified in the 100 free.
Strickler made states in the boys 500 free.
