Cumberland’s Dayton wins Region 1B title

Cumberland County High School 152-pounder Trevor Dayton, pictured above on left in a previous match, won the Region 1B championship in his weight class this past weekend at Riverheads High School, qualifying for the state tournament along with six of his teammates. Cumberland placed sixth out of 11 teams competing in the regional tournament. Dukes also qualifying for states included heavyweight Blake Barker, who placed third at regionals; 160-pounder Trequan Trent, who placed third at regionals; 138-pounder James Miller, who placed fourth at regionals; 220-pounder Thomas Trowbridge, who placed fourth at regionals; 126-pounder Cole Dalton, who placed sixth at regionals; and 195-pounder Mark Tuttle, who placed sixth at regionals. Celeste Mitchell, a 113-pounder, earned first state alternate status, and 170-pounder Kristen Caleb and 182-pounder Jake Price each earned second state alternate status. The Virginia High School League Class 1 State Wrestling Championships will be held Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. Wrestling begins each day at 10 a.m.
