Runaway offender in Buckingham apprehended

A runaway criminal has been apprehended after escaping from deputies in Buckingham Wednesday night.

A release from the sheriff’s office says that at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, Shifflet was sighted on Hall Road in the courthouse area of Buckingham County. 

Deputies, aided by state police, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conservation Police K-9 units and two Virginia Department of Corrections K-9 units responded to the area in search of Shifflett. After an exhaustive search through wooded terrain, the suspect was apprehended at 5:28 p.m. without incident.

At approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, deputies of the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office had Carl “Buster” Edward Shifflett, age 45, in custody for non-violent misdemeanor offenses. While at the courthouse in Buckingham County, Shifflett fled on foot while in handcuffs.

Deputies gave chase to Shifflett before losing him in the wood line just west of the courthouse off of Route 60. 

The release said that Buckingham County Sheriff Bill Kidd gives thanks to all agencies that participated in the search, the local citizens for providing tips and the news media for promptly informing the public of the escape, collaborating to bring this incident to a successful conclusion.
