The Redbud Garden Club held its December meeting at Sarah Schember’s home with everyone providing a dish for the Christmas dinner. It was a time of fun, entertainment and good food. The annual auction followed the meal. Items furnished for the auction included candy, mints, cookies, cheese straws, pickles, pies, candles, violet plants, plant food, flower clippers, vases, dishes, signs and lunch bags. The final item for auction was a reproduction of the famous banana exhibit that sold for an astronomical price. Needless to say, our prankster initiated a lot of laughter and the item proved to be worthless to the group.
The exhibits for the evening were “Christmas Past” a door decoration in the Williamsburg style using fresh and/ or dried materials and “Boxing Day,” which was an arrangement using silk or dried flowers in a box. Ribbon winners for “Christmas Past” were blue — Janet Higgins and Joyce Thompson; red — Audrey Robinson. “Boxing Day” winners were blue — Mary Hazlegrove, Janet Higgins, Ann Ligon, April McBride, Geraldine Sanderson, Nancy Schaeffer and Sarah Schember; red — Dottie Fahrner and Audrey Robinson. Horticulture exhibitor was Nancy Schaeffer with two blue ribbons.
