The Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Incorporated® presented its annual “Local Citizen of the Year Award” to JoAnn Vaughan for her outstanding contributions to the church and the community. Vaughan, of Cumberland County, is a dedicated member of Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland, where she serves as the church clerk and is also on two choirs. A retired Department of Corrections employee, Vaughan is a civic-minded, active member of her community, serving on numerous committees and supporting local efforts in voter restoration and registration and supporting education through volunteering at Cumberland County Elementary School. Vaughan is also a life member of the NAACP, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer, and one of the individuals who maintain Bright Hope Center. In addition, Vaughan routinely visits with elderly individuals in area nursing homes (even if she does not personally know them) in an effort to bring them joy. Vaughan has a genuine concern for others and is an inspiration to those she has contact with. Her dedication to the church, the community and her family is evident through her loyalty, friendliness and hard-working spirit. Pictured are, from left, sorority member Joyce Booker, Vaughan and sorority member Sasha Johnson. We commend Vaughn and the sorority for making a difference in the community.
