Time to ride the ‘Polar Express’

Beginning in January, The Buckingham Extension office will offer the Basics of Beekeeping classes where participants will learn the basics of beekeeping. Topics will include an introduction to beekeeping including resources, basic beekeeping equipment and supplies, the colony (queen, drone and workers), common pests, chemicals and diseases, and an overview of installing a package of bees. Classes will be held on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m., at the Buckingham Agriculture Center from January through April. Join Holliday Lake State Park on Jan. 1, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. for the First Day Hikes of 2020. Starting at 10 a.m., discover the park’s ancient history through its rocks. They reveal a past time of shallow inland seas and exploding volcanic island arcs. This hike is about a one- mile round trip on moderate terrain using sections of Lakeshore Trail and Northridge Trail and will last approximately an hour. At 1 p.m., this guided hike around Lakeshore Trail will include stops at Northridge Overlook, Holliday Creek and the famous 50-foot tall Holliday Lake Dam. This nearly seven-mile trip is on moderate to sometimes difficult terrain and will last almost three hours. This program is offered, weather permitting, and recommended for children 12 years of age or older. Comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, trail snacks and weather-appropriate clothes are recommended for both hikes. Parking fees are waived for the day. On Friday, Dec. 20, join the Buckingham Library from 12-2 p.m. for movie time. The feature film is “Polar Express.” The library is located at 1140 Main St., in Dillwyn.

A Christmas Eve Service will be held at Maysville Baptist Church on Dec. 24, from 4:30- 5:30 p.m. in the church’s chapel. The church is located at 13327 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Courthouse.
